Paddy Power Cheltenham Betting Preview

by Josh Powell | March 12, 2010

I've stayed well away from most of the handicaps for the time being. They can be a bit of a minefield and conditions on the day and other factors come into play – like money. I've still managed to come up with a list of horses to avoid have a look at. I reckon I'll have at least one winner this year. I've a fiver on seeing pigs fly over Cheltenham on day one too. If nothing else let me know your strong fancies and good luck next week!

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle
Apart from yours truly coming up with the most bonkers Money-Back Special, it wasn't done in the belief Dunguib won't win. The Couch got me drunk €“ but that's another story. I think he will win, but there's value to be had in the race and Oscar Whisky has caught my eye. He could be a monster and I think he's worth having a go with. Nicky Henderson's string have been flying all year too.

Arkle Chase
Right. You might think I've pulled this one out of my backside, but when Paul Nicholls opens his mouth, I listen (well, sometimes). He's always honest and upfront in his Racing Post columns and at a recent preview night I happened to be at, he was quite bullish on Woolcombe Folly. A 25/1 shot for the Champion trainer! And he has this stat in his favour: 21 of the last 22 winners have finished in the top 2 in ALL completed chase starts. Ok, ok, he's only run once in a chase, but the stat still counts!

Champion Hurdle
If the doubts over Solwhit's participation had not come to the fore, Go Native mightn't be the favourite. Considering his form at the track (last year's Supreme Nov winner) and his form throughout the season, he's a solid favourite at a nice price. He's inherited his stablemate Harchibald's aversion to the whip and idled last time out, but the stylish Carberry will produce the gelding just at the right time to win. Hopefully.

Neptune Hurdle
A lot of things are apparently against Rite of Passage in this race. His jumping could be found out and his form ahead of Healy's Bar doesn't say much, among other things, but the Master of Roswell, Mr Weld, doesn't send a horse over to the Cotswolds if they don't have a big shout. I'm on.

RSA Chase
By most accounts, this year's renewal of the RSA Chase is a two horse race. Both Long Run and Punchestowns are tipped to be future Gold Cup winners. However, I'm staying away from the short priced Henderson duo to get my hands on some value. Ian Williams' Weird Al looks the pick of the rest and the trainer is very keen on him. That's good enough for me.

The Bumper
Much like the handicaps, the Bumper is a conundrum that requires extensive research – research that I haven't got time to do. The Irish have dominated since its inception and this year is no different, but I fancy something from one of the smaller yards. James Lambe's Drumbaloo is unbeaten in three starts and the extremely capable Choc Thornton is the pilot. This one's a flyer, me tells ya.

Jewson Chase
The veritable Mouse Morris knows a thing or two about Cheltenham and his China Rock could land the Jewson Chase off a nice handicap mark. If the ground is on the good side of good-to-soft he'll be more than capable of landing it.

Ryanair Chase
Anyone that watched Tranquil Sea winning the Paddy Power Gold Cup will know this fella has plenty of ability. This is his ideal trip too and the course and distance form is another positive pointer. My stats monkey (Tom) tells me that all previous winners of the race had previously won at Prestbury Park. (He's one of seven in the field, but hasn't that made it all a little easier for you!)

Byrne Group Plate
Philip Hobbs's Prince Taime looks very well handicapped in the Festival Plate. He's lost his way a little bit, but this could be the time to bounce back with a win.

Friday

Albert Bartlett Nov Hurdle
Willie Mullins probably hasn't got the quality of string he had the last time he visited the Cotswolds in March, but in Enterprise Park he has a future star. Every preview night I have been at recently, he reserve's a special mention for the six year old. That's good enough for me.

Gold Cup
The big one. Unless you've been hiding out with Shergar, you should know this year's renewal of the showpiece event is being billed as Kauto Star vs Denman. I'm going to stick my head above the parapet and say Imperial Commander will come swooping under Paddy Brennan to land the spoils. Kauto is due a bad race and Denman, I reckon, won't be the same horse after his fall at Newbury.

Foxhunter Chase
Roulez Cool! I know nothing about the Foxhunters but someone (we'll call him Sam) who does says this lad should be odds on, and he's not, which means he's value!
