We had a huge response to last week’s Blog Competition – one that went far beyond the usual raggle-taggle bunch of dedicated souls who check Wikipedia and whittle down the options before landing on the correct answer. We had absolutely tonnes of entries – some more correct than others – and although I aim to make this competition mainly based on skill/knowledge with an element of luck, in reality this week it’s going to be more a tiny fraction of skill/knowledge and a whole heap of praying it’s your name that’s drawn out of the hat.
The correct answer was of course Retief ‘non-specific back injury’ Goosen. Sadly the Goose didn’t make it to the weekend of the Open, but unlike most of the English golfers in the field, this was down to back pain as opposed to purely bad golf (although there was an element of bad golf too). As several people were more than happy to smugly tell me, he won the US Open of 2001 at Southern Hills, Oklahoma and the 2004 version at Shinnecock Hills (stop chuckling) in New York and those victories – I think we can all agree, were splendidly accurately represented on my map.
We got a great response from our attempts to pimp this competition around the internet, so much so that we easily reached the maximum £/€150 Free Bet ceiling arbitrarily imposed on prizes for this competition because I can’t be trusted with a budget. Due to the sheer volume of entries however, I’m also giving out 3 runners up prizes of €/£25 for the people who had the misfortune to be drawn out 2nd, 3rd and 4th, but had the good fortune to be drawn out at all.
So, with no further waffle, the winner of the first prize is David Shirlow. Congratulations David – there’s a £150 Free Bet winging its way to you as we speak. The runners up prizes of €/£25 Free Bets go to Angela O’Donoghue, Darragh Kinsella and James Kelleher.
Thanks to everyone for entering. There’s more competition fun on the way soon.
