Man United won the league title last season at the end of what was one of the poorest quality Premier League seasons, with Chelsea, City and Liverpool improving their squads, the level of performance which landed that record breaking 19th crown wasn’t going to cut it. Nobody needed to tell Ferguson that and as expected he made some quality signings himself over the summer. Are they enough though? One proven Premier League performer and two highly talented youngsters. If they were the only changes then probably not but the return from loan spells of Cleverly and Wellbeck has injected energy into the side and Chris Smalling is continuing to look like the player Rio Ferdinand thinks he is.
It’s looking very promising for United but with injuries to experienced defenders will the youngsters be able to maintain these levels of performance for extended periods? Is this early season form a false dawn? There are still a lot of questions hanging over this team but then that’s all we ever really have at this point of the season, the answers won’t come until sometime next May.
