All the latest news about the Christmas racing season, stolen from elsewhere and presented to you in this bitesize format.
– Unless you’re one of the people who puts up their tree in August, this Sunday’s Hatton’s Grace Hurdle, doesn’t really count as Christmas racing, but there is a tenuous link to justify talking about it here. What was shaping up to be a fascinating Grade 1 contest is now a slightly less fascinating Grade 1 contest with Unaccompanied being ruled out. Dermot Weld is now [flimsy justification coming] pointing her towards the Leopardstown Christmas Festival where she’s likely to go for the Istabraq Hurdle. [Racing Post – pay for it print edition]
– A quality month of December racing really gets going with the Tingle Creek at Sandown this Saturday and Henry De Bromhead has revealed Sizing Europe has arrived safe and well. Some stormy weather in the vicinity of the Irish Sea had put the ferry crossing in doubt, but the Co. Waterford trainer said “We got the ferry to Holyhead okay. The journey was good. Both horses are absolutely fine! not adding “Sizing spent the whole journey with his head in the latest Twilight book and Symphony made friends with a showjumper from Galway. I think they’ll become penpals.” The Irish Times
– It’s a few months away, but the Aintree Grand National will be getting a lot of attention this Saturday as Aintree hosts the Becher Chase. Dessie Hughes has won a couple of them in recent years and he’s pretty confident Rare Bob can be his latest winner of the race. “He’s a good staying horse and gets the trip well. Going on the ground will be a big asset to him and he’s in good form,” was his summary of his runner.
– Legendary tipster and brother of kung-fu lunatic, Steven, Tom Segal aka Pricewise has run his knowing eye over the Welsh Grand National and picked out Wymott and Master Overseer as his value bets for the race. Those selections could look even smarter courtesy of the news that defending champion, Synchronised may sidestep his attempt at making it back to back wins in the race in favour of Leopardstown where he may be tempted to go for the Lexus Chase before hitting the dancefloor at Club 92.
