Christmas Racing News – 14th December

by Aidan Elder | December 14, 2011

– If you’re planning to send grapes, a big book of Sudoku or any other hospital-based clichés to Choc Thornton, you’d better be quick because he’s going to be sent home on Thursday. The jockey underwent surgery after breaking his arm in a fall at Hereford last Sunday, but doctors reckon he’s recovered enough to go home where he’ll undergo extensive treatment involving episodes of Cash In The Attic and Loose Women. He’ll miss the valuable Christmas racing season, but probably won’t get a lie-in as he’ll be snapped up to do several festive Morning Lines. Evening Echo

– David Pipe says he thinks Dynaste has earned the right to be on the receiving end of a sound hiding from Big Buck’s this weekend in the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot this Saturday. The exciting five year old has been making rapid progress, but will have to find 22 pounds to get close to upsetting the undisputed champ of the staying hurdle division and Pipe is enough of a realist to know it’s a search unlikely to yield success. “”You cannot be scared of one horse, although realistically we have it to do on official figures,” he surmised with the appropriate balance between bullishness and pragmatism. Racing Post

– Not that it’s a slow news day or anything, but the top story on the Racing Post pay for it edition is news that Kempton racecourse are selling a lot of tickets for King George VI Day after Kauto Star was confirmed as an intended runner as he bids for his 5th win in the race. Defending champion Long Run still heads the King George betting, but the addition of Kauto and stable mate Master Minded to the field is likely to put bums on seats and hot whiskeys in mouths. “Definitely Kauto Star in the King George VI Chase. I’m a huge Kauto fan. I’ve already put all my money on him. All 3 euros of it.”
