The highlight of the Oscars was, for many, this moment when the brilliant Sacha Baron Cohen dumped the ashes of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il all over a startled Ryan Seacrest.
The Ali G star turned up for Hollywood’s biggest event dressed as his latest comedy character, The Dictator, accompanied by two smokin’ female bodyguards and clutching an urn.
Cohen told Seacrest the urn contained the ashes of the late despot. “I love it here because it gives me an opportunity to bring my dear friend and doubles tennis partner, Kim Jong-il,” he explained.
“It was his dream to come to the Oscars and to be sprinkled over the red carpet and over Halle Berry’s chest,” said The Dictator.
Baron Cohen then pretended to fumble with the urn and up-ended the ashes over Seacrest’s jacket. Comedy gold.
Referring to his accessories, he displayed a pair of plain black socks. “As Saddam Hussein once said to me: ‘Socks are socks. Don’t waste money.'”
With the Oscars out of the way, and The Artist, predictably sweeping the boards, Paddy Power has today opened a book on this year’s Razzie awards. Adam Sandler may have to brush up on his speech writing skills as his movies are either favourites or joint favourites in the four major categories in which they have been nominated.
In the ‘Worst Picture’ category Adam Sandlers ‘Jack & Jill’ at 6/5 and ‘Bucky Larson’ at 15/8 head the market, followed by ‘Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon’ and ‘New Year’s Eve’ which are at 9/4 and 5/1 respectively.
Elsewhere, Sandler is also the favourite for the ‘Worst Actor’ gong at 3/2 with Russel Brand his nearest rival at 2/1. The Happy Gilmore star is also joint 15/8 favourite with Martin Lawrence for the ‘Worst Actress’ award.
Paddy Power said: “The Razzies aren’t to everyone’s taste but they’re certainly a change from the Oscars. Award nights are notorious for surprises, but I think it’s a safe bet that Adam Sandler won’t be short of figurines for his mantelpiece after this year’s ceremony!”
