It was AP McCoy’s day but the week belonged to Barry Geraghty who was crowned leading jockey at Cheltenham 2012 with five winners.
Geraghty got off the mark early with Sprinter Sacre (8/11f) who hosed up in the Arkle trophy to the delight of punters and the horror of Paddy Power after costing the firm €5 million in refunded and winning bets.
A second day treble aboard Simonsig (2/1f) Bobs Worth (9/2) and Finian’s Rainbow (4/1) put Nicky Henderson’s stable jockey in the driving seat and a Ryanair Chase win aboard Riverside Theatre (7/2f) sealed the deal.
It left Jason Maguire, Davy Russell and Ruby Walsh needing a miracle book of winning rides to catch him.
Iron man McCoy did his best though getting off the mark in the County Hurdle aboard Alderwood (20/1) and a scintillating Gold Cup triumph aboard Synchronised (8/1) for his first Blue Riband win since Mr Mulligan in 1997. In the end the work had been done and Geraghty almost rounded things off with a winner in the last.
