De Gea’s Promise Not To Shave Beard Until United Win The Premier League Could Backfire

by Rob Dore | March 18, 2012

“The beard pleases both me and my girlfriend. I want to keep it until United win the Premier League or Spain’s team wins the Olympics,” Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea (21) declared earlier this month.

Clearly a virgin to the world of beard growing, David is brim full of confidence and love for his expanding face fluff. That’ll change when he goes through the inevitable ‘itchy all the time’ and ‘sick of looking like a bum’ phases.

You will notice he inserted a back-door clause of sorts by adding Spain to win Olympic gold into the deal. United are top of the table and they can extend their lead over local rivals Manchester City by beating Wolves today, so he may be clean shaven and looking like an 11-year old boy again by May.

He has started playing a lot better of late. Some will tell you it’s because he needed time to settle in at Old Trafford and acclimatise to the Premier League. Others will insist it’s the magic of the beard. You’ll have to make your own decision but if United fail to win the Premier League this season and Spain fall short during the summer then De Gea may start to regret his promise.
