After a near unbelievable sequence of events, from their comeback win against Napoli, beating Barcelona in the semi-final to tonight’s madness, Chelsea have lifted their first Champions League crown.
That means Paddy Power has refunded a staggering £1m on Saturday night’s dramatic Champions League Final after pledging to refund losing bets on the match if Chelsea were crowned 2012 Champions of Europe.
This is the second year in the row Paddy Power has refunded a seven-figure amount on the Champions League Final having promised to refund losing bets on last year’s final if Barcelona beat Manchester United.
Tonight’s refund applies to all losing first/last scorer, correct score, and scorecast bets placed on the match.
In the dramatic game in Munich, Didier Drogba’s headed equaliser gave Chelsea the edge after Thomas Muller (10/1 to score first) headed Bayern in front.
Between those goals, odds on a penalty shoot-out had soared to 30/1, whilst odds on Chelsea to lift the trophy went to 12/1 with quite a few punters jumping on board both prices. As extra-time passed Petr Cech and Drogba emerged as the penalty heroes.
“Our main man Didier Drogba has dug us out there. He is a hero. Without him we are not here. He scores the goals in the big games. This is the one we really wanted,” said Frank Lampard afterwards.
