Take it as Red as money pours in for Martinez

by Sean Goff | May 25, 2012

IN THE HOTSEAT: Roberto Martinez is now long odds on to take over at Liverpool from Kenny Dalglish

The jungle drums on Roberto Martinez becoming Liverpool’s next manager grow louder as Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has reportedly said that the Anfield club have made him an offer.

Paddy Power have responed by slashing Martinez into long odds-on after the money started pouring in for the Spaniard late on Thursday evening. Never one to miss a trick Paddy Power make Steve Bruce their 3/1 favourite to take over at DW Stadium in what would mark his third stint in charge.

“Liverpool would have to buy out his contract. You are into £2 million to £3 million, minimum. Whatever the contract is worth I am sure Liverpool would honour that and buy it out,” Whelan told the Daily Telegraph.

Whelan is also understood to have given Martinez seven days to make up his mind if he is offered the manager’s job at Anfield.

“I have asked Roberto to make his mind up as soon as possible. If we have to lose him, I will move very quickly to appoint a successor.”

The Martinez for Liverpool bandwagon went into overdrive this morning when a picture supposedly showing John W Henry and Martinez in Florida was released on Twitter.

Former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has been backed into 2/1 from 25/1 with Paddy Power to become the new Aston Villa manager after sustained support from early on Thursday morning.

Meanwhile former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri has been backed from 25/1 into 5/2 to become West Brom’s new manager after Roy Hodgson left to take up the England job. The former Chelsea boss, nicknamed the “Tinkerman” was sacked by Inter at the end of the season midway through a two-year contract and could be joined at the Baggies by Ray Wilkins.
