Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers is now odds-on favourite to become the next Liverpool manager with Paddy Power.
And the Wigan chairman Dave Whelan is even longer odds-on to be removed from the Anfield club’s Christmas card list.
Whelan seems to have the inside track on all matters Merseyside as the Reds search for a replacement for Kenny Dalglish has taken more more twists and turns than the Derby course at Epsom.
On Tuesday evening, Rodgers was
1/5 1/4 to be made next permanent Liverpool manager in online betting with Paddy Power. Martinez had drifted to 3/1.
Swansea were forced to deny there had been a second approach for former Northern Ireland international Rodgers despite bookmakers taking evasive action all day yesterday and earlier this morning.
And the mischief-making Whelan has given his blessing for Liverpool to poach Swansea’s current boss so that he can hold on to Roberto Martinez.
“If it is true that Liverpool want to speak with Brendan Rodgers it proves they don’t know who they want as manager,” Whelan said.
“I hope they choose Brendan Rodgers but Roberto has told me he is speaking with Liverpool again on Tuesday.
“I have now made it clear that I want this sorted out by Thursday at the latest as we have to get on preparing for next season.”
Liverpool’s pursuit of Martinez looked to have been a done deal as the Spaniard hardened to odds-on over the weekend when picture of him with Liverpool’s owner John W Henry emerged over the weekend on Twitter.
But doubts about whether Martinez could work alongside a sporting director has forced the Reds to look elsewhere.
