In comparison to the frantic finale to the Premier League, football news has slowed to something of a crawl. You can actually hear the disappointment in the voices of Sky Sports News presenters as they ‘inform’ us there are no new injury worries ahead of Euro 2012.
For now they’ll have to suffice with tenuous transfer rumours, obsessing over the squads for Euro 2012 and the Liverpool manager ‘saga’.
In the transfer news, Eden Hazard (21) has dominated headlines with his looming move to Stamford Bridge. The Belgian playmaker has been teasing us with veiled hints of where he may end up. Will it be Manchester City, will it be Manchester United or will it be Chelsea? Sending a tweet claiming to have agreed a deal with ‘Champions League winners’ appears to have settled that one. Unless he didn’t mean this year’s winners.
Another foreign star who has been humming and hawing over his next move is Shinji Kagawa (23). The Borussia Dortmund midfielder looks set for a £17m move to Manchester United. How he expects to get a game ahead of the likes of Michael Carrick and Ji-Sung Park we just don’t know. No, wait we do, because he’s a lot better than they are.
Having already landed Lukas Podolski (26), Arsene Wenger is rumoured to be interested in spending a big wad of cash on Athletic Bilbao’s Fernando Llorente (27). This may be an example of the power of Twitter to generate a rumour out of the ether though. It’s hard to imagine Wenger spending upwards of £30m on another striker unless Robin Van Persie (28) was definitely on his way.
Didier Drogba’s (34) big money deal with Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua may not be the certainty we previously believed. The rumour mill is linking him with a move to Real Madrid. Go to China to make loads of money and hang out with Nicolas Anelka or go to Madrid to make less but still loads of money and hang out with lots of people who aren’t Nicolas Anelka. It’s not much a choice when laid out like that.
AC Milan defender Thiago Silva (27) was strongly linked with a big money move to Manchester City. Until he came out and said he isn’t leaving.
Joe Cole (30) has been on Sky News trying to remind the Liverpool hierarchy that he’ still contracted with them for another two seasons. A month ago he was talking about remaining in France at Lille but that is looking less likely. The possibility of being sold to West Ham and having to play under Sam Allardyce has spurred him to this affirmative action.
