Euro 2012: Group B live blog

by Josh Powell | June 17, 2012

Group B was instantly branded the ‘Group of Death’ and tonight the bell will toll for two of the teams.

The Germans have already gone and put their towel on a quarter-final sun lounger after two wins from two. They face the Danes who will need to get a better result than Portugal to qualify and will be relying on Nicklas Bendtner and his lucky pants to deliver the goods.

The Portuguese face Holland needing to better the Danish result to reach the knock-out phase. And then there’s the Dutch! Despite being pretty terrible in their opening two defeats Holland can still qualify if they win by more than one goal and Germany beat Denmark.

Hopefully you’re less confused than me. It’s probably best to just enjoy the footy and think about the permutations later!

================================

Holland 1-2 Portugal FT
Denmark 1-2 Germany FT

9.37pm: So Germany face Greece in the quarter-finals with Portugal playing Czech Republic. The Germans were far from spectacular tonight but always looked in control. Portugal took a while to get going but once they did they could have put plenty more past a desperate Dutch team. Will Ronaldo finally step up on the biggest stage? He had a cracking game tonight that’s for sure.

9.35pm: All over in both games! Germany top the group with Portugal through in second. The German’s weren’t that impressive but got the win. Devastation for the Danes who have had a good tournament. Holland didn’t pick up a point and were pretty awful. Ronaldo finally joined the dance, fashionably late, bagging a brace.

9.33pm: Shweinsteiger absolutely wellies it into the wall. On the other tele Andy Townsend has described Holland’s campaign as ‘pathetic’.

9.32pm: Stoppage time in both games. Germany have a free-kick.

9.30pm: Not long left in either game and Ronaldo, on a hat-trick, smashes one against the post! Could have easily been more for Portugal here, Ronaldo has had plenty of chances, he could have scored four or five tonight.

9.29pm: Sneijder slides through Van Persie who fires well wide.

9.28pm: Nani makes way for Rolando. He’s in no rush to get off the pitch and Robben whispers what I can only presume are sweet nothings to him as he leaves.

9.26pm: As it stands Germany will play Greece and Portugal will face Czech Republic in the quarter-finals. Holland don’t look like they care. To their credit Denmark are trying to have a go against the Germans.

9.24pm: Denmark have to attack now and Jakob Poulsen makes way for Mickleson. Agger heads over from a corner.

9.23pm: Ooohhh. Van Der Vaart has another effort from range and it swerves, dips and curls before whacking the post. Unlucky for Rafa.

9.21pm: GOAL! Poulson slips and the Germans counter. Ozil tries to put in Klose but there’s too much pace on the ball and it luckily falls to Bender. The Leverkusen man makes no mistake and it looks like Germany will face Greece in the quarter-finals.

9.20pm: Germany swao Gomez for closer and Denmark take off Zimling for former ‘Liverpool legend’ Christian Poulson.

9.19pm: Badstuber takes a good chunk of Bendtner’s shirt in the box but there’s nothing doing. You’ve seen them given before.

9.18pm: Holland look beat to be honest. They have lost any kind of shape in the middle of the park and Portugal are running riot.

9.16pm: Robben and Van Der Vaart have a bit of a lovers tiff. Incredibly a goal for Denmark now and Germany are out. What a story that would be!

9.15pm: GOAL! Ronaldo gets his second. Portugal on the counter attack and Nani puts a class ball across to Ronaldo. He is the definition of composed. Takes a touch steps inside, pauses and then buries it. Class finish and Holland are all over the place.

9.13pm: Oh Nani! Ronaldo puts it on a plate for the United winger six yards out and Stekelenburg somehow keeps it out. The keeper had no right to make that save though. Portugal should be ahead. A bad miss from Nani.

9.12pm: Meireles never recovered after getting flattened by de Jong and is replaced by Custodio.

9.10pm: Van Persie’s first real involvement in the game is to plant a massive elbow into the side of Pepe’s head. Pepe probably deserved it for being a thug. RVP picks up a booking and to be fair another referee could have sent him off for that.

9.09pm: Anderson makes a good save for Denmark after a Schurrle effort is destined for the bottom corner. Germany look very relaxed here.

9.08pm: Willems is off for Affelay as Holland look to change things up top.

9.07pm: Raul Meireles gets pole-axed and Holland don’t put the ball out. Neither do Portugal and from the break Ronaldo sets up Oliveira and it’s a fine save from Stekelenburg.

9.05pm: Podolski comes off for Schurrle for Germany. In the Portugal game Postiga makes way for Oliveira.

9.04pm: Not had an update from Germany v Denmark for a while and that’s because frankly there’s not a lot happening. No urgency from either team to be fair.

9.01pm: GOAL! NO! OFFSIDE! Postiga knocks in Ronaldo’s cross come shot but the linesman gets this one spot on. Sometimes the linesmen don’t get the credit they deserve for good decisions. On that note…Well done Mr Lino. Great call.

8.59pm: Would love to know how many touches Van Persie has actually had. The Arsenal man has probably forgotten what the ball looks like here. Portugal looking more comfortable than the Dutch who need something special.

8.57pm: Robben wins a free-kick and Sneijder wants to take it quickly so knocks Pereira over. It’s all pretty comical stuff that the referee sorts out with a handshake. The free-kick comes to nothing.

8.56pm: Denmark definitely had the better of the second half so far. They are still 5/1 to beat Germany.

8.54pm: Big chance! Sneijder whips in a cross and Vlaar is in acres of space but can only nod it over the bar. Think that was more shoulder than anything from Ron Vlaar.

8.53pm: Willems takes out Mountinho from behind and gets booked. He’ll now miss Holland’s next game, which, in all honesty doesn’t look like being the quarter-final.

8.51pm: Denmark have had a good opening five  minutes and Poulsen has just clipped the post! Some cracking football from the Danes.

8.50pm: Moutinho hits a left-foot volley and it is nowhere near. The ball is still rising. That was an absolute mile away, terrible effort.

8.49pm: Nani picks out Ronaldo again who has his shot blocked. Ronaldo then megs Vlaar and gets a kick for his troubles. Vlaar is busy picking his pants up from round his ankles as Portugal line up this free-kick.

8.48pm: I thought Van Persie had been brought on for this half but supposedly he has been there from the start. The lad hasn’t had a kick.

8.47pm: The second half has begun in both games.

8.46pm: STAT! Portugal have never gone out at the group stage of a European Championship.

8.44pm: The teams are making their way out for the second half and we’ll be back under way very shortly.

8.40pm: I’m not sure if I’ve gone mad or if ITV are really showing clips of a man with a ferret on a lead eating a baguette.

8.38pm: In the other game it has been pretty much all Germany. They are 11/4 to win 2-1 and 11/2 to win 3-1 with Paddy Power.

8.37pm: Ronaldo looks like a great bet to score the next goal at 11/2. He ran the show for the last 20 minutes there and definitely looks like he could get another tonight.

8.36pm: As it stands Germany and Portugal are going through.

8.35pm: Germany are clear favourites at 5/6 to beat Denmark. The draw is 9/5 and if you fancy Denmark to win it they are 5/1 with Paddy Power.

8.34pm: Portugal are 17/10 to win with Paddy Power, the draw is 15/8 and Holland are 7/4.

8.32pm: Half-time! 1-1 is the score in both games. Podolski put the Germans ahead before Krohn-Dehli equalised after good work from Bendtner. Holland went ahead through a cracking curling effort from Van Der Vaart but then it was all Portugal. The equaliser came from Ronaldo and Portugal looked the more likely to take the lead as that half came to an end.

8.31pm: Denmark cause problems fro Germany from a corner but Kjaer has a shot blocked.

8.28pm: Cracking tackle from Kjaer to prevent Gomez putting Germany back in front. In the other game Nani puts a delicious cross in but Ronaldo rises a touch early and the ball goes harmlessly out of play.

8.26pm: Ronaldo makes Van Der Weil look really silly on the left flank but then puts a shot wide. Might have been better picking out Postiga there. Ronny wants to do it all on his own it seems.

8.25pm: Germany content to knock the ball around in the middle of the park here. The pace has slowed a touch in both games which is good news for my keyboard.

8.22pm: Van Der Vaart nails Nani in the chops with a cheeky stray arm. Veloso has a go left-footed from the free-kick but it’s well over.

8.21pm: Germany have a fee-kick right on the edge of the box, dead central. Podolski leathers it over the bar.

8.20pm: Saw a replay of that Ronaldo effort and it was travelling at some pace! From the corner he powers a header inches wide. Ronaldo has taken this game by the scruff of the neck here. He’s 11/2 for the next goal.

8.19pm: Holland are all over the place. Ronaldo pings one from miles out which is fisted away by Stekelenburg, then Nani puts a dangerous cross in that is booted into the stands. It’s all Portugal with over 10 minutes till half-time.

8.18pm: Clever short corner by Germany, Podolski whips it in and Gomez has plenty of space but hits his volley in to the floor.

8.17pm: Ozil whips in a free-kick for Germany and Anderson flaps at it. The Germans have a corner.

8.15pm: Portugal look really threatening here. Nani flashes a left-foot shot just wide.

8.12pm: GOAL! Ronaldo makes it 1-1. A good finish this time from the Real Madrid midfielder and it’s a crucial goal. The run was timed to perfection and a great finish past Stekelenburg makes it all square.

8.10pm: A Danish corner is headed back across goal by Bendtner and Krohn-Dehli nods it in from six yards. Lots of mutterings on ITV about how zonal marking has let down the Germans there. To be fair it was a cracking leap from Bendtner to put it on a plate for Krohn-Dehli.

8.10pm: GOAL!! Krohn-Dehli equalises for Denmark!

8.09pm: Great save! Ronaldo looks in the mood tonight! He rises to meet a Nani cross but Stekelenburg does well to save.

8.08pm: Oh chance! Nobody picks up Nigel de Jong from a corner but his free header goes over the bar.

8.08pm: Gemrnay knock it around at the back quite easily.

8.06pm: Meanwhile Portugal are getting a foot-hold in the game against Holland. Ronaldo flashes a cross across the six yard box. That German goal means despite being behind Portugal are going through as it stands.

8.03pm: GOAL! Germany lead! Podolski has lashed the Gemmans in front from 10 yards after a good cut back from Muller. Podolski on his 100th cap for Germany puts them ahead.

8.02pm: Germany in complete control against Denmark.

8.01pm: Ronaldo breaks away down the left as Portugal counter. He steps inside and his right-foot shot comes off the outside of the post. Would have been totally against the run of play.

7.59pm: Bendtner flashes one wide from 25 odd yards. Wonder if he has his lucky pants on?

Nicklas Bendtner

7.58pm: It’s the start Holland needed. They have to get another to stand a chance of going through. It really was a cracking hit from the Spurs midfielder.

7.57pm: GOAL!! What a hit! Van Der Vaart! Holland lead. Robben sets him up 20 yards out and VDV curls a delightful effort into the bottom right-hand corner. Great shot.

7.55pm: Germany look brilliant coming forward. Plenty of options and plenty of pace heading towards the Danish goal. So far Denmark are defending well but how long can they hold out?

7.53pm: Seeing that Muller chance again and it really should be 1-0 Germany. He took his eye completely off the ball.

7.52pm: Ronaldo lines up a free-kick from 30 yards or so and it pings off the wall out for a corner. It comes to nothing though.

7.51pm: Sitter! Muller has  a clear sight of goal from seven yards but miss-times his shot and it’s smothered by Anderson. Big chance for the Germans.

7.50pm: A dangerous Denmark corner is held well by Neuer.

7.50pm: Sneijder skews a volley well wide.

7.50pm: Holland have started the better in the other game. Plenty of time on the ball and  a very patient build up. Huntelaar’s movement up top looks good.

7.48pm: Germany already look dangerous. Muller flashes a volley just over the bar. He’s 8/1 to score first.

7.46pm: Closely followed by Portugal v Holland

7.45pm: And we’re off in Germany v Denmark

7.43pm: All goes splendidly well. The Dutch singing was particularly impressive closely followed by Portugal. Now we wait for the countdown!

7.40pm: Anthem time!

7.39pm: Patrick Veira thinks Holland will score goals. Roy Keane thinks Ronaldo will do quite good. Cheers lads, more top of the drawer analysis.

7.38pm: Roy Keane is spitting feathers on ITV. He’s kicking off after Trap layed the smack down earlier today.

7.35pm: 10 minutes till kick-off! The action tonight promises to be hotter than Van Der Vaart’s missus Sylvie.

7.27pm: STAT! Holland have had 41 attempts on goal in their opening two games but only 14 have been on target.

7.22pm: So the Dutch have to win and in come Van Der Vaart and Huntelaar. Can they make the difference? Holland are 6/1 to qualify from the group with Paddy Power. Germany are 1/66, Portugal are 4/11 and the Danes are 5/2.

Germany: Neuer, Bender, Hummels, Badstuber, Lahm, Khedira, Schweinsteiger, Muller, Ozil, Podolski, Gomez

Denmark: Andersen, Jacobsen, Kjaer, Agger, Simon Poulsen, Kvist Jorgensen, Eriksen, Jakob Poulsen, Zimling, Krohn-Delhi, Bendtner

7.19pm: Germany and Denmark team news on the way…

Holland: Stekelenburg, Willems, Mathijsen, Vlaar, Van Der Wiel, Van der Vaart, Nigel De Jong, Sneijder, van Persie, Robben, Huntelaar

Portugal: Rui Patricio, Joao Pereira, Bruno Alves, Pepe, Fabio Coentrao, Meireles, Veloso, Joao Moutinho, Nani, Postiga, Ronaldo

7.17pm: Team news on the way very soon indeed!
