Royal Ascot Round-up: Buick and Gosden nail a 95/1 treble

by Josh Powell | June 22, 2012

There were some lovely looking fillies on show at Ascot today and the racing wasn’t bad either. In the Albany Stakes punters got off to a flyer as the 7/4 favourite Newfangled absolutely bolted clear to win by over two lengths. The John Gosden and William Buick team getting off to a flyer on a stunning day for the duo.

Punters were left out-of-pocket in the King Edward VII Stakes though. Astrology was the 8/11 favourite and the Aidan O’Brien trained horse had been heavily supported. Unfortunately for punters he was a distant fourth as Thomas Chippendale held off the challenge of Noble Mission to give trainer Sir Henry Cecil the one-two.

The biggest race of the day was the Group One Coronation Stakes and once again punters crashed into the O’Brien trained Homecoming Queen who went off 9/4. The 1000 Guineas winner could not replicate her best form though and was never in contention as 12/1 shot Fallen For You proved a good winner for the combination of Gosden and Buick.

The duo made it a treble in the Wolferton Handicap with 3/1 favourite Gatewood. The four-year-old held off Black Spirit by a neck in a thrilling race to clinch what was a 95/1 treble for John Gosden and William Buick. The success took both men to the top of the trainer and jockey rankings respectively.

Punters and the Queen herself had plenty to smile about in the fifth race as Her Royal Majesty’s horse Estimate was a clear winner of the Queen’s Vase. Ryan Moore was in the saddle of the favourite who had been backed from 5/1 to 3/1 this morning to leave the bookies emptying their pockets again.

The bookies had the last laugh though with Eton Forever doing the business on the soft ground in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at odds of 14/1. The Roger Varian trained five-year-old overcame the odds to storm home on the stand side.

Paddy Power Blog’s tipsters had a good day today. John Parrott tipped up both Newfangled and Gatewood with the former particularly impressive in the day’s opener. Ruby Walsh napped the Queen’s horse Estimate which saw plenty of support and romped home at 3/1.
