Picture perfect: London 2012 opening ceremony

by Josh Powell | July 28, 2012

LIGHTING UP LONDON: The capital exploded into life

Last night’s Olympic opening ceremony cost around £27million but left viewers with an overwhelming pride of Britain. Credit has to go to Danny Boyle who choreographed an incredible three-hour long show that had everything from David Beckham on as speedboat, the Queen jumping out of a helicopter with James Bond and Mr Bean performing Chariots of Fire.

The opening ceremony also included performances from Dizzee Rascal, Emeli Sande, the Arctic Monkeys and Sir Paul McCartney amongst others. Sir Paul brought the ceremony to an end with an emotional and rousing rendition of the Beatles classic ‘Hey Jude’.

Sir Chris Hoy led Team GB into the stadium to a huge ovation from the sell-out crowd. The triple-gold medallist carried the Union Jack in the parade of the 204 nations at the 30th Olympic games.

Around 7,500 volunteers from around the world took part in the spectacular show in front of a packed Olympic Stadium in east London and a television audience reported to be over a billion. With that many eyes on the capital it’s safe to say that everyone is pretty pleased there were no spectacular cock-ups and even the rain stayed away!
