TINY TIM: Scored plenty of goals for club and country and would love a return to Merseyside

Afternoon update from the Paddy Power Blog on all the latest betting moves in sport

China’s anti-doping chief has hit back at claims that Yi Shiwen used performance enhancing drugs on her way to Olympic gold in the 400 metre individual medley. The 16-year-old swimmer blew the competition out of the water, smashing a world record and shaving five seconds off her personal best time. It prompted plenty of questions of drug-use as the swimmers final length was quicker than that of American champion Ryan Lochte.

Team GB’s cyclists will be using super-special technology in the games this year – in the form of hot pants! The battery operated pants will keep athletes bums and thighs at the optimum temperature of 38 degrees centigrade right up until race time. The technology took four years to develop and Britain’s cycling team think it could be the difference between gold and silver on the track.

Michael Phelps could become the greatest ever Olympian today. The American swimmer already has 17 medals to his name, 14 of these being gold – and he could add two more to that collection today.  Russian gymnast Larisa Latynina won 17 medals in the 1960′s and it looked like a record that would never be beaten until now. Phelps competes in the 200 metre butterfly and then joins his team-mates for the 4×200 metre relay as he looks to smash all kinds of Olympic records.

The hunt for gold: Is today the day for Team GB?

Vincent Kompany has resorted to trying to sweet talk Robin Van Persie to joining Manchester City. According to reports in the Daily Mail, Kompany has called RVP ‘incredible’ and ‘near perfection’. The Champions are fighting it out with Manchester United and Juventus for the striker’s signature whose contract with the Gunners runs out next year. RVP joined Arsenal in 2004 and has only won one trophy which was the FA Cup.

The Guardian is reporting that Andy Carroll’s supposed loan move to West Ham United will fall through. Rumours around the lack of Newcastle Brown Ale in London are yet to be confirmed but Carroll looks set to resist a move. Liverpool had accepted the deal which was a £2million loan move initially, turning into a permanent £17m transfer provided that West Ham stay up this year. From the start Carroll has expressed his desire to prove himself at Liverpool but it seems he simply isn’t part of Brendan Rodgers plans.

Tim Cahill may have only just left Everton but he has opened the door to make a spectacular return to Merseyside according to the Sun. Cahill was unveiled as a New York Red Bulls player yesterday after completing his £2million move from Goodison Park and admitted that he could see himself returning to the Premier League on loan in the MLS close season.
