Afternoon update from the Paddy Power Blog on all the latest betting moves in sport

Olympics

Team GB picked up another medal on the water and this time it was silver for the men’s lightweight four. The team were favourites for gold but were edged on the line by South Africa in a thrilling finish. Team GB just pipped Denmark on the line to snatch second in an unbelievably close contest. Rebecca Adlington showed her class in the pool today leading the 800 metre freestyle at every turn. The Olympic champion won easily to reach the final and as the fastest qualifier and with plenty in the tank expectations are high.

Bradley Wiggins celebrated his gold last night by going out and getting ‘blind drunk’. Wiggins tweeted pictures of himself getting buckled with friends in a bar by St Pauls Cathedral last night after become Britain’s most decorated Olympian yesterday. The Team GB hero won gold in the men’s time trial which was his seventh Olympic medal and wasted no time celebrating in style.

In a less celebratory but still equally drunk situation Australian rower Josh Booth had a few too many and ended up getting detained by police. According to the Daily Mail the athlete allegedly damaged a shop front and after being arrested by police, fainted and hit his head, ending up in hospital as a precaution. Booth is now back in the Olympic village and will face further questioning from police tomorrow although he is not expected to face charges.

Andy Murray is about to get started on court number one in his quarter-final against Nicolas Almargo. He’ll be back on the court later in the mixed doubles with Laura Robson. It should also be a thrilling night in the pool when record-breaker Michael Phelps takes on Ryan Lochte in a thrilling 200 metre individual medley final.

Football

Andy Carroll has been left out of the squad for Liverpool’s important European qualifier against FC Gomel. It’s another clear cut sign that Carroll is leaving Anfield and that Brendan Rodgers has no place for him the team. The club have officially put his absence down to a ‘slight groin strain’ picked up in training but if you are gullible enough to believe that then you are in trouble. West Ham have shown a keen interest in a move for the England striker who has expressed his desire to stay and fight for his place at Liverpool.

The Sun are reporting that Moussa Dembele is a shock target for Real Madrid. The La Liga Champions are reportedly interested in the midfielder who could leave Craven Cottage for around £10million. Jose Mourinho is rumoured to be keen in the Belgium international as Madrid try to fend off the challenge from Barcelona this season.

Reports in the Liverpool Daily Post and the Guardian suggest that Joe Allen could be on the verge of reuniting with Brendan Rodgers. The Swansea man looks like he is on his way to Liverpool in a sensational move for the midfielder who is currently with Team GB. According to reports Swansea are holding out for £15million but Liverpool have offered £12.5 and Jonjo Shelvey on loan.

Celtic beat HJK Helsinki 2-1 in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier. Goals from Gary Hooper and Charlie Mulgrew cancelled out Rasmus Schuller’s opener to secure victory ahead of the second leg in Helsinki next Wednesday.

Racing

The stunning action continues at Galway and Glorious Goodwood today with the action in England starting at 2.15pm and in Ireland racing begins at 1.50pm.

The ground at Goodwood is good but it is more of a worry at Galway were it is soft, yielding in places.

Tom Lee had a cracking day tipping for Paddy Power punters yesterday with an 11/4 and a 12/1 winner and he fancies Lexi’s Boy in the Galway Hurdle at 4.50pm. Over at Goodwood he fancies Sadler’s Rock to reverse his Ascot form with Colour Vision in the Goodwood Cup. You can read his tips for today’s racing at Goodwood and Galway here.

There is also racing this afternoon from Stratford where the card starts at 2.20pm and Nottingham where racing begins at 2.35pm.

Don’t forget to keep checking the Paddy Power Blog for the latest tips from Champion jockey Ruby Walsh.
