The Saints were marching into the Premier League on a high when they clinched automatic promotion from the Championship last May.
However, the charge came to a sudden halt when the fixture lists were released and it was revealed that Southampton would mark their return to the Premier League with a trip to the Etihad Stadium to face reigning champions Manchester City.
Listen carefully and you may still be able to hear Roberto Mancini and company celebrating their first Premier League title and City fans gloating about their last-gasp taste of glory to heartbroken Man United supporters.
But it is often much harder to stay on top, with the weight of the world weighing down on your shoulders.
As such, a Southampton team strengthened over the summer with the signings of Jay Rodriguez and former Rangers ace Steven Davis could have the perfect chance to record a dramatic upset.
Those with confidence in The Saints’ ability can get 6/1 for a draw or a huge 14/1 for Nigel Adkins and company to walk away from the Etihad with all three points.
Meanwhile, if Man City’s price of 2/11 to beat Southampton to get their title defence off to a flier does not offer much value, odds of 8/13 for the champions to be leading at half time and full time may be more appealing.
