Wigan Athletic v Chelsea
August 19th, 1.30pm, DW Stadium
Boy, Chelsea sure did leave it late to salvage something from the 2011/12 season. After failing to finish in the top five of the Premier League, the Blues only went and won the FA Cup and Champions League.
The upturn in form seemed to come into force when Andre Villas-Boas was given his marching orders and Roberto Di Matteo stepped in as interim manager.
After passing his trial period with flying colours, Di Matteo now has to do it all again but this time as the permanent Blues gaffer. And his first challenge is to avoid a slip-up when travelling to play Wigan Athletic.
It would be utterly bonkers to underestimate the Latics though. At the DW Stadium last season, for instance, they held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw and beat Manchester United and Newcastle United – three results which dramatically affected the outcome of 2011/12 Premier League standings.
Wigan are an enticing 3/1 to hold Chelsea to another draw this weekend, though there has to be interest in the 8/15 for the Blues to exact swift and sweet revenge.
For a twist in the tale, how about considering the 4/1 shot on offer for Victor Moses to score for the Latics at anytime? He has been hunted by Chelsea all summer long after all.
Prediction: Victor Moses to score at anytime at 4/1
