Betting Update: Van Persie, Aguero, Frankel, Garcia

by Sean Goff | August 20, 2012

Morning update from the Paddy Power Blog on all the latest betting moves in sport

Football

New boy Robin Van Persie is set to make his debut for Manchester United tonight when they face Everton at Goodison Park. Michael Carrick looks likely to be drafted into central defence to partner Nemanja Vidic as United’s injury toll at the back starts where it left off last season.

Meanwhile, RVP’s compatriot Alexander Buttner (23) is expected to sign a five-year contract with Manchester United in the next few days. The move seems to have caught the Vitesse Arnhem left-back – who has yet to make his international debut – by surprise.

“If you told me a week ago that I would have been training with the likes of Robin Van Persie I would have sent you to a mental home,” the Dutchman said. We’re not sure he’s qualified to send people to mental homes.

Former United striker Michael Owen is in advanced talks with Everton as he searches for a new club to fund his horse racing obsession. Owen is understood to be redecorating the treatment room at Goodison before he moves in.

Roberto Mancini’s phone will be buzzing this morning as football agents dangle their players in front of the Man City boss should Serio Aguero’s knee injury be worse than expected. The Argentinian striker was stretchered off after 10 minutes in  the Citizens’ 3-2 win over Southampton on Sunday but doesn’t expect to be out for long.

New Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova got off to a winning start in La Liga as Barca beat Real Sociedad 5-1. David Villa scored on his return as a brace from Lionel Messi, and one each from Carlos Puyol and Pedro Rodriguez gave them the points.  Champions Real Madrid drew 1-1 at home to Valencia.

Racing

Planteur needs rain to be risked against Frankel in the Juddmonte International Stakes on Wednesday, according to trainer Marco Botti. The ground at York is currently good to firm ahead of wonder horse Frankel’s debut over 1m 2f at the York festival.

Racing this afternoon comes from Thirsk, Stratford, Wolverhampton and Tramore with Roscommon, Windsor and Kempton under orders tonight.

Golf

Sergio Garcia’s agonising wait to see if he will make the European Ryder Cup side for the sixth time continues today. Heavy rain washed out the final round of the Wyndham Championship yesterday so the tournament continues today.

The Spaniard needs a top three finish to move back to a qualifying position for September’s showdown in Illinois. Garcio leads by one stroke from Jason Dufner, Tim Clark and Bud Cauley. Ryder Cup holders Europe face United States at Medinah Country Club, Chicago, from 28-30 September.
