GLENEAGLES HAS LANDED: Thomas Bjorn defends his JWC crown in Scotland this week

By Lee Dover

Sports fans up for a spot of golf are in for a double-whammy of treats this weekend – with two huge tournaments taking place.

The Johnnie Walker Championship and the Barclays Championship getting underway on both sides of the Atlantic.

Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn will try to defend his JWC title at Gleneagles in Scotland  and is 30/1 in Paddy Power’s online betting to retain the crown.

But it won’t be easy for this year’s European Ryder Cup vice-captain as there are 260 European Tour title winners and seven Major champions in the field, including fellow VC’s Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley.

Italian Francesco Molinari heads the betting at 10/1 with Paddy Power.

Fans hoping that a Scot can achieve home glory may look to a resurgent Paul Lawrie who’s solid form in the past few months has sealed his place in Europe’s 2012 Ryder Cup team recently. Lawrie said:

I’m thrilled to know that my place in the 2012 Ryder Cup team is now secure. My focus is on the here and now though and that continues with playing well here at Gleneagles.

SWEET: If Woods or McIlroy are leading after Day One we’ll refund all losing first-round leader bets

Across the pond golf’s hottest names are gearing up for the Barclays Championship – part of the FedEx Cup series in Farmingdale, New York.

Tiger Woods and recently crowned USPGA champion Rory McIlroy are playing partners for the first two days and joint-favourites to win the tournament outright in Paddy Power’s golf coupon.

And with the Money-back special Paddy Power are offering (above) it may be worth having a punt on Dustin Johnson to flourish as he defends his title.

The long-hitting American is 28/1 to be leading at the end of round one with Paddy Power online  and stat buffs will note that he is the only golfer at Bethpage State Park this weekend to have been victorious in FedExCup play-off tournaments for two years straight.

Not a bad shout.
