The future’s bright: Blackpool are on a roll

by Josh Powell | August 26, 2012

LIKE FATHER LIKE SON: Tom Ince, son of Paul, has been influential this season

Blackpool fans have every right to be excited with their start to the Championship season. The Seasiders are sitting pretty at the top of the league having won all three of their opening games, scoring ten along the way and only conceding once.

Yesterday they spanked six past Ipswich at Bloomfield Road to maintain their 100% record and the Tangerine Army can be forgiven for thinking about a return to the Premier League, even at this early stage. Blackpool have started the season impressively and Ian Holloway’s attacking style of play is reaping the rewards.

The demolition of Ipswich comes off the back of two notable victories against Millwall and Leeds. In particular Leeds are another team eyeing a return to the top flight and the 2-1 home win was a statement of intent from Blackpool who showed plenty of class and heart to come from behind to take the three points.

After coming so close to promotion last year, beaten by West Ham in the play-off final, it would be no surprise to see Blackpool in the hunt again this time round, but could they actually top the table?

They are 15/2 with Paddy Power to win the Championship with Blackburn and Bolton ahead of them in the market and that looks like a cracking price for a team who know how to keep grind out results at the business end of the year.

One man who could be the key to Blackpool’s season is Tom Ince. Son of ex-England captain Paul Ince, Tom bagged both goals in the 2-0 away win at Millwall and then helped himself to another couple against Ipswich.

The 20-year-old winger has been touted as one of the Championship’s hottest talents and Holloway revealed that Blackpool had received a bid from another club but that Ince had committed himself to the Seasiders.   It would be unrealistic to expect him to continue such goal-scoring form from now through until May but having someone like him in the team who knows how to find the onion bag could be the difference in the hunt for promotion.

It’s very early in the season to be talking up potential champions but you cannot ignore how well Blackpool have started. It is very possible that come Christmas that price of 15/2 will look absolutely massive.
