Knee-jerk reactions: Rodgers, Villas-Boas and RVP

by Josh Powell | September 2, 2012

FEELING THE HEAT: AVB’s side were booed off at White Hart Lane

At the end of another frantic weekend of Premier League action it is time to prepare for the classic knee-jerk reactions that you will hear about in the pub tonight and no doubt in work tomorrow morning. These are reactions that many fans have after a game, oblivious to the fact that we are only three games into the season and one good or bad result can change their entire opinion of the world. As football fans we are inherently fickle creatures and rightly so.

Rodgers out!

The Brendan Rodgers revolution is under-way but it isn’t going as well as many on Merseyside had hoped it would. One point from nine isn’t good enough for Liverpool fans and the performance today against Arsenal was lacklustre and sloppy. The 2-0 defeat to the Gunners comes off the back of a wobbly display against Hearts in the Europa League and punters are reacting.

Liverpool are now out to 11/4 for a top four finish and 5/6 to finish in the top six after Everton’s strong start to the season. This is Liverpool’s worst start to a season for 50 years and the pressure is on Rodgers to improve results.

Manchester United are a ‘one-man team’

Another knee-jerk reaction following United’s 3-2 victory over Southampton will be rival fans saying that they are a one-man team. It’s fair to say that despite his atrocious penalty miss, Robin Van Persie dug United out of a very big hole today with his hat-trick and it has been reflected in the betting.

RVP is now the 11/4 favourite to be the season’s top goalscorer after notching four goals in three games but Manchester United remain at 2/1 outright for the title. For RVP to be top goalscorer and United to regain their crown it is 13/2.

AVB – Another Vacancy Beckons

Tottenham fans are having a miserable time of late and the classic knee-jerk reaction after booing the team off the pitch after the draw at home to Norwich was to start #AVBout trending on Twitter. Spurs have now dropped points at home to West Brom and Norwich after conceding late goals and the fans vented their fury towards new gaffer Andre Villas-Boas.

Tottenham are 3/1 to make it into the top four this year and 8/15 to finish in the top six. The pressure on AVB is mounting rapidly though and it is 13/5 he leaves Spurs this season. It is 10/3 that he leave next season and 13/5 that he leaves in the 2014/15 campaign.
