Dry your eyes mate: Why is Ronaldo so sad?

by Josh Powell | September 4, 2012

CRY BABY: Ronny wells up on the bench

Cristiano Ronaldo refused to celebrate either of his goals for Real Madrid against Granada at the weekend because he is ‘sad’ and ‘upset with people in the club’. This has sparked a media frenzy debating whether CR7 will move back to England but Paddy Power is delving deeper and trying to find out the cause for Ronaldo’s sadness.

The favourite in the betting at 1/3 is that Ronaldo is upset because, despite being one of the best players in the world, lots of footballers are earning more than him. The 27-year-old earns a measly €10million a year which is half of the sum Samuel Eto’o makes at Anzhi Makhachkal (The Russian club with oodles of cash).

It’s also a far cry from the City pair of Sergio Ageuro and Yaya Toure who earn €12.5m and €13m respectively. Wayne Rooney is also sitting pretty on €13.8m so clearly Ronaldo has plenty to be sad about on a poxy €10m-a-year.

It is 7/2 that the Spanish tax law is the reason for Ronaldo’s mood with the superstar expected to cough up a bill of 40 percent of any new contract at Real Madrid. And punters are keen to back the 4/1 that Ronny is sad that Carlos Tevez didn’t sign for Madrid and 5/1 that he’s run out of his favourite hair gel!

Clearly being second-best to Lionel Messi’s skills would be a major concern for Ronaldo and it’s 12/1 for that to be causing the winger to come over all teary. A big outsider is that he is missing Manchester’s rainy weather and it is 66/1 for Ronaldo to state that is making him upset.

We’re not sure what is making Ronaldo sad but it definitely doesn’t seem to be affecting his performance on the pitch. He helped Real Madrid get back to winning ways and hopefully it won’t be long before we see him smiling again. Chin up Ronny son.

Watch Ronaldo’s interview after the Granada game where he tells journalists that he’s really sad.
