PADCAST: Mark Ogden on the Manchester battle and United winning in ‘Fergie time’

by Josh Powell | September 6, 2012

1000 NOT OUT: Typically in his 1000th game in charge, Sir Alex won in ‘Fergie Time’

Listen here |

This week Mark Ogden, the Northern football correspondent from the Daily Telegraph joins the Padcast to give us his insight into the two Manchester clubs, how they’ve started the Premier League season and their dealings in the transfer market.

Mark  looks closely at Manchester United’s midfield, the evergreen Paul Scholes and the importance of the under-rated Michael Carrick.

‘Alex Ferguson told us that you don’t need a ball-winning midfielder these days you just need anticipation. That’s why Manchester United have Michael Carrick’.

Mark also tells us his opinions on the influence Robin Van Persie can have for Manchester United who are 2/1 to regain their crown. City remain the 6/4 favourites to make it back-to-back Premier League titles after a solid start to the season but Mark isn’t convinced by their deadline day business.

‘It’s a strange one because if I was scouting Benfica I would’ve said don’t sign Javi Garcia, sign Axel Witsel who looks to be a real box-to-box midfielder. Garcia is more of a defensive midfielder who can play at centre-half. Roberto Mancini’s big thing is to have someone at centre-half who can bring the ball out alongside Vincent Kompany and that’s why they tried for Daniel Agger. If Garcia was top of City’s list they would have made a move earlier’.

There’s all this and more in a jam-packed Padcast this week. Barry’s Sports News is back, as well as a look ahead to the weekend’s international fixtures and a chance for you to get your hands on some lucky pants!

Here’s a treble that Barry likes for the weekend

  • Belgium, Ireland and Norway to win – 11/2
