Group B
Montpellier 1-2 Arsenal
Olympiakos 1-2 Shlake 04
Group C
AC Milan 0-0 Anderlecht
Malaga 3-0 Zenit St Petersburg
Group D
Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Ajax
Real Madrid 3-2 Man City

9.43pm: Good night for Arsenal in France as they beat Montpellier 2-1 and start their campaign with a win. Unfortunately for City it’s not going to get much easier with Borussia Dortmund and Ajax awaiting the English champions.

9.42pm: Joe Hart is fuming about blowing a 2-1 lead with five minutes to go. Asked if he credits Real Madrid, he says ‘No’. He is raging. I really want to see him run across and punch Chiles who is being very patronising.

9.40pm: What an incredible game. Madrid dominated the first half and a couple of cracking saves from Joe Hart was all that kept it 0-0 at the break. After that it all kicked off. City took the lead completely against the run of play through substitute Edin Dzeko before Madrid equalised through Marcelo with 15 minutes to go. Kolarov’s free-kick that may have come off Alonso creeped in at the far post on 87 minutes and City thought they’d won it. But two minutes later a cracking swivel and shot from Benzema made it 2-2, and in added time Cristiano Ronaldo leathered a right-footed shot from the edge of the box that had Hart beaten.

9.36pm: Final whistle. Real Madrid 3-2 Manchester City

9.34pm: One minute left. Madrid are holding on to the ball.

9.32pm: GOAL! RONALDO! CR7 HAS WON IT! Can you believe it. Hart makes a great save a minute earlier from Benzema and then moments later Ronaldo hits one from the edge of the box and Joe Hart can’t do anything about it. Jose does the celebration on his knees thing and the Bernabeu is bouncing.

9.31pm: Hart pulls off another good save from Ronaldo who was a bit selfish there with a team-mate in a better position. Yellow card for Dzeko after a cheeky handball.

9.29pm: GOAL! 2-2! What a game. It’s Benzema who spins on the edge of the box and turns delightfully to place a lovely shot past Joe Hart and in to the corner.

9.27: GOAL! CITY LEAD AGAIN! IT’S 2-1. Kolarov whips it in, bending it towards the far post and with several people diving to get a touch on it, it creeps in at the far post. I’m not sure if it goes in on it’s own or whether it brushes the boot of Alonso. Either way City are ahead!

9.26pm: Some good City pressure now. They win a free-kick now and Kolarov will whip this one in. A good spell for this for the Manchester side.

9.24pm: Big powerful run from Kolarov and he wins a corner. Can City nick it?

9.23pm: Patient build up from Madrid and Modric under pressure from outside the box bends one into Hart’s arms. Comfortable for the keeper.

9.21pm: Nastasic does well to put Ozil off and clear the header. Plenty of pressure from Madrid here and they are pushing hard. Hart blocks a volley from Benzema and then saves a long range effort from Xavi Alonso.

9.19: Will we have a winner? The draw is 8/11. City are 7/1 and Madrid are 17/10. 12 minutes and added time to go.

9.18pm: GOAL! CRACKER! Marcelo forced onto his weaker right foot but he bends one that takes a wicked deflection and Joe Hart is beaten. City were ahead for seven minutes.

9.17pm: Tevez slips it through to Yaya Toure and it should be 2-0! Side netting unfortunately but that was a good chance for City to kill off the game there.

9.14pm: Changes all round. Khedira and Higuain make way for Modric and Benzema. On the City bench Zabaleta is on for Maicon who looked to be struggling there. Maybe just a lack of match fitness from the full-back.

9.13pm: City are now 8/11 for the win with Madrid at 5/1. The draw is 21/10.

9.12pm: Kompany picks up a yellow card for barging Ronaldo. 20 minutes to go. Can City hold on for a famous win and an incredible start to their Champions League campaign?

9.10pm: CITY LEAD! DZEKO MAKES IT 1-0! Yaya Toure breaks forward and slips in Dzeko. The striker is through on Casillas and he stays cool and calm to slot it home. Can you believe it.

9.08pm: Oooommmppphhhh! Marcelo at it agian from almost an identical spot, this one isn’t far over the bar with Hart struggling again. I bet he was brutal at raw-arse when he was a kid.

9.06pm: Essien comes off for Ozil as Mourinho looks to try and find a way to break City down.

9.04pm: Silva is clattered and then makes way for Edin Dzeko as Mancini changes it up. City have a free-kick in a dangerous position here out on the left flank. Tevez whips it in and it is defended well. Tevez then picks it up, side steps a defender and puts that ball into orbit. A wasted chance for City.

9.02pm: Oh wow! Marcelo hits one and that stays hit. Left footed, about 22 yards out and Hart is struggling but it whistles past the left-hand post. That was going at some unreal pace.

9.01pm: Ronaldo is rapid. He tears down the left flank at a brutal pace to not only keep a ball in but put in a great cross. Once again Clichy defends well and another attack breaks down. The ball camped in the City half right now.

8.58pm: Marcello puts a wicked ball in across the six yard box. Low and hard and Clichy does brilliantly to get it away and not ping it into his own net. That was crying out to be put in and Clichy defends excellently.

8.55pm: Yaya Toure picks it up and shoots from range. It’s deflected and City have their first corner of the game. Javi Garcia gets his head to it but it’s a difficult one to guide and it’s gone over.

8.53pm: Yellow Card! First one of the night and it’s for Javi Garcia who went in a touch clumsily on Khedira. A touch harsh maybe. Alonso looks for Pepe with the free-kick but puts it well out of play. Can’t pass for toffee that fella.

8.52pm: Alonso hits a pass that is travelling a good half-length of the pitch and Di Maria would have been on to it and in on goal but Kolarov does really well to intercept.

8.50pm: Mancini will be fuming. City get behind Madrid for the first time in the game but instead of picking anyone out in the box Kolarov controls it like a donkey and it goes out of play.

8.48pm: Oh wow. Di Maria’s shot hits Garry Barry and Hart is stranded. Luckily it is deflected wide and the corner comes to nothing. Madrid have started the quicker again and if this carries on it will be a long old night for the fans in that away end.

8.47pm: And the second half begins! Can City hold on? Could they even steal a win? They got away with it in that first half.

8.47pm: City fans if you’re confident, Tevez is 17/2 to score first with Yaya Toure a whopping 14/1.

8.46pm: Madrid to win 1-0 is 11/4 and Ronaldo to score first is 16/5 with Higuain at 11/2.

8.44pm: It looks to be a close game and either no goals or one goal is currently 4/5

8.41pm: OK. Off Bebo and back to 2012. City are now 5/1 to win with Real Madrid odds-on at 8/11. The draw is 15/8 which will probably suit City down to the ground to be honest.

8.39pm: Surely that can’t be real can it?! This picture’s the best…

8.33pm: Need some entertainment at half-time? Want to avoid Adrian Chiles? It appears this could well be Andy Carroll’s Bebo account that he never shut down! It hasn’t been accessed since 2008 and includes some brilliant facts including the fact his favouirte film is the Jungle Book! Real or fake? Check it out yourself here.

8.31pm: Half-time. City looked alright in the last 10 minutes of that half. Kind of. Man of the match at the break is Joe Hart which tells its own story. The good news is that it is 0-0. Nothing wrong with that at all.

8.30pm: One minute of added time and Di Maria puts one wide from 25 yards out. Ronaldo looks at him disapprovingly.

8.26pm: Blimey! Now Di Maria bends one from 20 yards just around the post. Hart looked to have it covered with his dive but that wasn’t far away. Not long till half-time here and Madrid should be ahead.

8.25pm: Higuain has missed a great chance. Di Maria chips it over the top and Hart leaves it for Kompany, who in turn leaves it for Hart. Higuain gets a boot to it three yards out but blazes it over. Best chance of the game there and Hart and Kompany exchange some particularly glances.

8.23pm: Yaya Toure bursts forward and for a second Madrid are outnumbered at the back. Unfortunately he slips it just behind Silva whose shot is then blocked. A lot better for the Manchester side though.

8.20pm: Bad news for City as it appears Samir Nasri has picked up a muscle injury of some sort. Could be a hammy, might be something completely different, I am not qualified enough to say. What I can tell you is Kolarov is on for the injured Nasri.

8.19pm: City seeing some more of the ball now but still yet to test Casillas. At least they’re holding on to the ball here, knocking it around with a touch more confidence.

8.15pm: Half an hour gone and Madrid have certainly been the better team. Closing down City very quickly and keeping the tempo very high. Andy Townsend is violently encouraging Yaya Toure to pick up the ball and run but unfortunately when the big man does he can’t pick out Nasri.

8.13pm: Ronaldo pings another one wide from distance. He is still looking pretty sad.

8.11pm: Sharp play from Madrid and the pressure is mounting. It’s wave after wave of white shirts but City are holding firm.

8.10pm: City are a whopping 11/2 to win this game and the draw is 13/5.

8.07pm: Free-kick in a dangerous position out wide. Alonso whips it in but Hart collects. Madrid are now 6/4 to be leading at half-time. There are more than 20 minutes for City to try and hold on because that is all they’re doing right now.

8.05pm: How have Madrid not scored?! Higuain is onside from a chipped through ball but Hart stands his ground and does well. Higuain manages to keep it in play and the ball is deflected to Ronaldo who pings in an acrobatic volley and then Khedira blasts it over the bar. Squeaky bum time for City.

8.03pm: Arsenal 2-1 Montpellier! Gervinho puts the Gunners in front!

8.01pm: Great news from France! Lucas Podolski has made it Arsenal 1-1 Montpellier.

8.00pm: 15 minutes gone and City could do with just holding on to the ball. Yaya Toure is the latest culprit to give it back to the home side. Madrid certainly looking a lot more dangerous.

7.57pm: Another good save! That’s Joe Hart 2-0 Cristiano Ronaldo. City are living very dangerously though giving Ronny that much space to shoot. He is 3/1 to score first.

7.56pm: City struggling to keep hold of the ball every time a Madrid move breaks down. It is 5/4 that Madrid are winning at half-time.

7.55pm: News from France! Arsenal have gone 1-0 down to Montpellier and it’s a cheeky chip of a penalty from Belhanda!

7.54pm: Great save! Ronaldo makes Kompany look daft, cuts inside and you’d put money on him finding the corner but Joe Hart gets down well to his left and tips it round the post. Cracking keeping from England’s number one.

7.52pm: Silva tries to find Tevez with a lovely little flick but Pepe mops up the danger.

7.51pm: Madrid have started better in a noisy Bernabeu Stadium, City haven’t really got on the ball yet but their fans are making themselves heard.

7.50pm: Sergio Ramos is on the bench and the big rumour is, according to Tyldesley, that there’s been a massive barney with Mourinho. It wouldn’t surprise me to be fair.

7.47pm: CR7 has a go from 30+ yards but it’s wide. He has scored 150 goals for Madrid in 149 games so he’s allowed to shoot from anywhere. Garry Barry don’t get any ideas lad.

7.45pm: And we’re off! It’s only taken 15 seconds and Clive Tyldesley has mentioned the ‘Group of Death’. It’s going to be a long night so I’ve whacked it on mute.

7.44pm: If you are a grown man and you say the Champions League music doesn’t send shivers down your spine then you are lying. We’re almost about to kick-off.

7.42pm: Ok, take that team from below and then stick Matija Nastasic in there  instead of Joleon Lescott and Javi Garcia starts ahead of Mario Balotelli. Sweet.

7.39pm: Hold the front page! Now ITV are saying that City team is wrong, absolute madness. Chiles is a bumbling fool.

7.39pm: And here’s your odds! Real Madrid are the 8/13 favourites with City at 9/2. The draw is 3/1.

7.35pm: Here’s the teams!

Real Madrid

  • 01 Casillas
  • 02 Varane
  • 03 Pepe
  • 12 Marcelo
  • 17 Arbeloa
  • 06 Khedira
  • 07 Ronaldo
  • 14 Alonso
  • 15 Essien
  • 22 Di Maria
  • 20 Higuain

Manchester City

  • 01 Hart
  • 03 Maicon
  • 04 Kompany
  • 06 Lescott
  • 22 Clichy
  • 08 Nasri
  • 18 Barry
  • 21 Silva
  • 42 Y Toure
  • 32 Tevez
  • 45 Balotelli

7.28pm: Joe Hart will no doubt be playing between the sticks so here’s a pic of his lovely other half Kimberley Crew. 1-0 City? That’s 17/1 tonight.

7.21pm: Still no news on teams, but I’d be reasonably confident that Ronaldo will be playing for Real Madrid. On that note here’s a picture of his lovely girlfriend Irina Shayk. She is super-beaut.

7.17pm: First drama of the night! Sky Sports News, UEFA and the club’s website all have different teams up. Who is playing, I don’t know. But don’t worry. Get yourself a beer or a brew and relax. I’ll get on the blower to Roberto now.

7.15pm: Team news coming right up!

7.13pm: Just over half an hour away from kick-off and what a game we have in store. Real Madrid have only won one of their opening four La Liga games and that will give City some confidence but what a tough opening game. There is no doubt that Jose Mourinho, Cristiano Ronaldo and co will be out to prove a point and City will have to be at their best to win tonight. Could one of these teams be the Champions of Europe come May?
