Ruby Walsh: Listowel could be a Bundle of Fun

by Josh Powell | September 20, 2012

Kevin McManus Beginners Chase 4.05pm

Back in Focus has schooled very well, he went round Thurles at the back end of the season and Punchestown in May. He ran for us over hurdles at Tipperary in July and we were disappointed he got beaten but he’s every bit a chaser.

Two miles and six today and I’d say three miles and six would suit him because he gallops forever and likes soft ground. He schooled very well and we’re hopefully that he’ll go very close. He has a big reputation. He’s a graded winner in a novice hurdle two seasons ago but he is ground dependent.

He likes soft ground and he likes extreme distances. There’s plenty of races for him but maybe he is a mid-winter horse rather than a spring horse.

Guinness Handicap Hurdle 4.35pm

I was disappointed Dara Tango got beat at Sligo by Top Madam after travelling very well with Barry Geraghty but she just pulled out more. He’s a nice weight at 10-stone-five but you would have to worry about the ground. It’s very tacky.Listowel last year was soft but loose and this year it’s very gluey. With a horse like him with form on good ground you’ll have to worry about the ground.

McCoy is on Princeton Plains who had a great chance in the Galway Hurdle and ran ok with 11 7 on his back. He won the race last year and will run a big race again.

The rating of 116 for Dara Tango would be more workable if the ground was good but the race he won he’s entitled to be 116 so it’s a fair rating and I wouldn’t say he’s miles ahead of the handicapper or anything.

Ladbrokes Handicap Hurdle 5.05pm

Bundle of Fun won this race last year and travelled well and jumped well that day. He’s been banging on the door over fences I was second on him in Wexford and he was second in Tramore but the ground is a worry again. If it was loose he’d have a chance but not on tacky ground. All his better form is on a quicker surface and his best run over fences for a long time was in Wexford on almost firm ground so that’s a worry.

Victrix Gale is ground dependent as well and her form improved dramatically early in the summer on good ground. She’s a very light weight on her back but I think she might struggle.
