Match of the century: Del Piero v Heskey

by Josh Powell | October 12, 2012

Forget going out on the lash tonight and set your alarms for 7.35am Saturday morning. The international break has robbed us of a Saturday afternoon filled with Premier League action but we have something even better streaming live on PPTV.

Imagine the Champions League final, The World Cup final and Christmas rolled into one and you’ll still not get anywhere close to how good Sydney FC versus Newcastle Jets is going to be.

The two star men on show of course are Emile Heskey and Alessandro Del Piero. A world-renowned striker who played for one of the best teams in the world and almost took his county to glory on a global stage faces off against some Italian fella.

Del Piero spent 19 years at Juventus making a record-breaking 705 appearances and scoring a phenomenal 290 goals. he is a club icon who stayed with Juve even when they were sent to Serie B and is a hero in Italy. Now the star-striker has joined A-League side Sydney as he aims to help the game grow in Australia and work on his tan.

Emile Heskey may not have had as much success in England, in fact he certainly didn’t. Heskey scored 151 goals in 696 appearances playing for Leicester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Wigan and Villa giving him a strike success rate of 21%. A goal every five games doesn’t read well but we will never forget the way he slotted the ball past Oliver Khan in Munich in 2001.

Unfortunately many football fans tend to remember moments like this which happened far more frequently to poor old Emile.

Del Piero’s Sydney are the 20/21 favourites for the clash with the Newcastle Jets available at 14/5 and the draw is 12/5Del Piero is 9/2 to score first and 13/10 to find the onion bag at any time. Heskey is 7/1 to open the scoring and 23/10 to net at any point in the game.
