Stat Attack: Back the Three Lions to roar past Poland

by Josh Powell | October 16, 2012

SPOT ON: Steven Gerrard could be the man to win the game for England from the penalty spot

By Josh Powell | World Cup 2014 qualifiers

Roy Hodgson’s England head to Warsaw tonight to face Poland off the back of their convincing 5-0 thumping of San Marino at Wembley. This is a very different test for the Three Lions and will be a far tougher game for Hodgson’s team. But they are unbeaten in Group H and an away win would give them a six point cushion over ‘The White Eagles’.

The Paddy Power Blog has spent the morning breaking down all the monster figures and stats you need to know to inform your betting ahead of the crunch game.

  • England have lost just one of 17 meetings against Poland, winning 10 and drawing six. The only one they’ve lost was in 1973
  • In the 17 meetings between the two teams there have been 37 goals which is just over two goals a games
  • The last two matches between England and Poland have finished 2-1 to England
  • England have taken the lead in four of the last five games against Poland
  • In the last four years England have played 13 World Cup Qualifying games winning 11 of them, drawing one and losing just one
  • In the same amount of time Poland have played 12 qualifiers winning just four of them and losing five
  • Six of Poland’s last seven games have had under 2.5 goals
  • England have scored a penalty in each of the last three games
  • Poland are unbeaten in the last 10 home games
  • In the last 10 games at home Poland have scored 14 goals and conceded three

England are 19/20 to fly back home with all three points in the bag and that looks like a good bet in what could be a very close encounter. The draw is 12/5 with Poland priced up at 3/1 for the win.

All the form points to a low-scoring affair and under 2.5 goals is a fair price of 8/13If you fancy England to get their third consecutive 2-1 victory over Poland you can back it at 15/2 and the more cautious bet might be England to win by exactly one goal at 5/2.

It is 11/2 that England score a penalty for the fourth game on the spin and with that in mind Steven Gerrard or Wayne Rooney could happily find themselves on the score-sheet depending who decides to step up for the spot-kick. Rooney is 9/2 to score first and 7/5 to find the net at any time with Gerrard at 9/1 to open the scoring and 10/3 to find the onion bag at any time tonight.

If Wayne Rooney scores the last goal Paddy Power will refund all losing first goalscorer  last goalscorer, correct score and scorecast singles on the match.
