Betting news on the Champions League, Rory McIlroy and today’s racing

by Josh Powell | October 24, 2012

It was a tough night for Celtic fans in the Nou Camp after the Hoops suffered a last-gasp defeat to BarcelonaJordi Alba scored the winner with 30 seconds to go after Celtic had taken the lead in the first half and then defended as though their lives depended on it. Manchester United looked shaky at the back once again but managed to come back from two goals down to beat Braga at Old Trafford 3-2 with Javier Hernandez scoring a brace. Elsewhere it was a terrible night for the Champions Chelsea as they were played off the park by Shakhtar Donetsk and lost 2-1.

Tonight the English champs Manchester City head off to face the Dutch champs Ajax in the Amsterdam Arena. Mancini’s men are yet to register a win in the competition and defeat tonight could see them on the brink of crashing out. They are the 3/4 favourites to win with Ajax at 7/2 and the draw at 11/4.

Arsenal are in action at the Emirates where they host Shalke. The Gunners sit top of Group B having won both of their opening matches and are the evens favourites to take all three points tonight. Shalke are unbeaten in the competition though and will be a tough side to beat at 14/5The draw is an appealing price at 12/5 with Arsenal looking to bounce back from the defeat to Norwich at the weekend.

Fresh from giving the Americans a spanking at Medinah, Rory McIlroy is out on the course again this week and joined by 10 of his victorious Ryder Cup team-mates in the BMW Masters in Shanghai. It was pride and honour at stake in Chicago but this time there is a tasty £725,000 up for grabs for the winner which Rory could spend on a shiny new alarm clock or maybe a sensible haircut.

Rory is the 9/2 favourite for the prize with Luke Donald and Justin Rose both at 9/1. Lee Westwood is also in contention at 10/1Ryder Cup hero Ian Poulter is 22/1 in the market.

If McIlroy wins Paddy Power will refund losing bets on whoever finishes second!

Racing today comes from Newmarket, Fontwell, Worcester, Kempton and Naven.

The Sun newspaper has highlighted an each-way double at some juicy prices that might be worth 50 cent.

‘Try a Prince Khalid Abdulla each-way double at Newmarket’s end-of-season Maidens’ party with Desert Imagesecond and third in her previous two runs partnered by Michael Hills (2.00pm) and So Beloved under James Doyle in the 3.05pm’
