David Pipe exclusive: The Liquidator’s form got a boost

WINNER ALL RIGHT: Pipe has had four winners at Open meeting

I hope I haven’t used up all my luck with Our Father 11/4 and Goulanes 7/1 on Saturday – after a double on Friday aswell. We were all disappointed with Grands Crus’ run and it’s hard to put a finger on exactly what happened. He seemed fine after the race when examined by the vet – although he did lose a shoe – so we’ll let him settle back in at Pond House before we decide on our next move.

We’ve a few runners this afternoon on the final day of the Paddy Power Open meeting and I reckon His Excellancy (1.10) in the 2m novice chase on Sunday is my best chance of a winner today.

Close House was fourth in the Neptune Hurdle at the Festival last season behind Simonsig and makes his seasonal debut today. Lightly-raced and we hope there’s more to come.

Kazlian will run in the Racing Post Hurdle (2.50). He got a little held up in his preparation so should improve for the run. He was fourth in the Fred Winter at the Festival behind Une Artiste – he likes Cheltenham – and isn’t too badly handicapped.

The Liquidator (4.00) is in Sunday’s bumper and is just back in at Mill Pond after the summer. He’s certainly a horse for the future having finished second in a bumper in Ireland and the winner that day Clondaw Kaempfer won at Aintree last month. Bumpers mightn’t be his game as he wants a bit further but the form is good.

I Shot The Sheriff (3.25) won well at Wetherby from Liberty’s Gift. I’m not sure of the quality of the field that day but he works nicely at home and we’ll see how he goes today.

The Package came out of last Saturday’s Badger Ales Trophy at Wincanton fine and will probably go for the Hennessy at Newbury now. Can be quite keen in his races but is settling better now. The Hennessy should be run to suit him but unfortunately he’s gone up in the handicap.

Problema Tic who finished fifth yesterday to Monbeg Dude in the 3m 3f handicap chase rounded off last season with two chase wins. Both he and The Package could be Aintree Grand National horses in time.
