Can the Hammers spare a Diame?
Arsene Wenger looks set to raid the Gunners’ piggy bank to trigger a £3.5m release clause in West Ham’s midfield dynamo Mohamed Diame’s contract.
Wenger – whose side are in real danger of missing out on Champions League qualification for the first time in 16 seasons – has been impressed with the Senegalese international this season and said:
He has a great presence in the games. I’ve seen him in games where he’s had a big impact. They have many players who can be dangerous, but he can drive the midfield.
United’s Pepe talk
The jungle drums over Pepe Reina’s exit from Liverpool are getting louder with arch-rivals Manchester United reportedly joining the race along with Barcelona and Arsenal to sign the Liverpool keeper.
On the upside Philippe Coutinho could sign on the dotted line for the Anfield club later this afternoon after an improved offer was made to Inter for the 20-year-old Brazilian. Inter rejected an £8m approach from the Reds last week but haven’t walked away from negotiations.
Celtic have rejected Norwich City’s £7m offer for striker Gary Hooper (24) even though he has turned down a new contract offer from the Parkhead club. Manager Neil Lennon is confident that the Bhoys top scorer will stay at the club – despite the snub.
