Oldham v Liverpool: How it happened

by Rob Dore | January 27, 2013

With Chelsea drawing away to Brentford and Spurs losing away to Leeds already today, is this turning in to Super Shocking Sunday?

Brendan Rodgers has gone for a strong side as he looks to avoid an upset, as well as keeping his side in a competition they have a realistic chance of winning this season.

Can Paul Dickov mastermind the biggest shock of the day?

Final Score: Oldham 3 – 2 Liverpool

=================================

Full-Time: Oldham deservedly beat Liverpool thanks to a towering performance and a brace from Matt Smith. There were some hairy moments at the end but Paul Dickov’s team go in the hat and Brendan Rodgers is left to think up the excuses for why his defence looked so poor today. Coates was particularly dreadful so don’t be surprised to see a new defender brought in to Anfield before the transfer window closes.

5.54pm:  Sturridge latches on to a ball over the top but is unable to bring it down. Time is almost up for the Premier League side.

5.51pm: We’re in to the six minutes of injury-time.

5.50pm: Steven Gerrard almost does what Steven Gerrard does best, saving Liverpool’s rear-end. However his game winner from the edge of the box smashes off the crossbar and out.

5.46pm: Liverpool pouring the pressure on as we go in to the last five minutes but Oldham are holding firm. Just about.

Betting Update: Oldham 4/9, draw 11/5, Liverpool 13/1

5.41pm: Coates finally figures out a way to defend against Matt Smith. He accidentally pushes Smith in to one of his team-mates and the Oldham forward appears to have injured his shoulder. He’s going off. Another bit of luck for the Reds.

5.39pm: Goal!!! Liverpool pull one back through a volley from Joe Allen from the edge of the box. It takes a massive deflection off Baxter on it’s way to the bottom right hand corner. Liverpool needed that bit of luck.

5.37pm:  Smith beats Coates in the air yet again and sets up Simpson. The striker is through on Jones but hits the ball across the goal and wide. He should have finished this tie off right there.

5.36pm: Shelvey, who came on for Sterling, has a shot from distance but can’t keep him down.

5.31pm: Coates almost slips to allow Smith through. In the end Smith fouls the Argentine and picks up a yellow card for his troubles.

5.29pm: Brad Jones is cutting a lonely figure in the Liverpool half as Oldham drop further and further back.  Gerrard has settled the Reds but still no second goal.

To score 5th goal: Oldham 8/1, Liverpool  8/15, no 5th goal 15/8

5.25pm:  Still no second goal for Liverpool. There’s 25 minutes left on the clock but those minutes will tick away quickly enough.

Price Update:  Oldham 1/2, Draw 11/4, Liverpool 11/2

5.15pm:  Some much needed reinforcements come on for Liverpool. Gerrard and Downing replace Borini and Wisdom. Can they turn it around from here?

5.13pm: Rodgers is trying to get Gerrard on before his team go 4-1 down.  He’d better hurry.

5.11pm: More sloppy defending from Liverpool presents Baxter with a chance. He tries to dink it over Jones but doesn’t get enough height on the ball. The home side look the more likely to score the next goal.

5.09pm: The Liverpool defence has been very poor today and Wabara got his head on that cross far too easily. He did well once he did make contact but it hasn’t been good enough from Liverpool’s defenders.

5.07pm: Goal!!! And Oldham go 3-1 with a fantastic header from Wabara.

5.05pm: The second-half starts and Liverpool carve out a great chance within seconds. Fabio Borini makes  hash of it though and sends the ball well over.

Price Update: Oldham 11/4, Draw 9/5, Liverpool 11/10

Half-Time: Oldham started excellently and scored first. Liverpool got themselves back in to the game with Suarez’ equaliser and from there looked like they would go on and take the lead. However they continued to struggle with the aerial prowess of Matt Smith, with Coates in particular having a very shaky day. The visitors failed to take their chances and Oldham punished them right at the death. There was suspicion of a free-kick against Sturridge but foul or not it doesn’t excuse Brad Jones spilling the ball like that.  If Oldham win some rag is going to use the pun-tastic headline “Matt Finish”. Liverpool’s front four are playing well but the midfield pairing of Henderson and Allen just looks a little lost. We could see Gerrard or Lucas very early in this second half.

4.49pm: Goal!!! Oldham go back in front  as Smith scores again after Brad Jones produces a howler, spilling a simple cross from Wabara. Baxter pounces to push the ball through to Smith who taps in from a yard out.

4.46pm: Liverpool continue to struggle with the height of Smith who nods a cross towards goal, forcing Jones to tip over.

4.43pm: Jose Baxter is certainly the brightest spark for Oldham. He puts Robinson away with a good ball and the striker forces a corner.

4.34pm: Baxter should have been included in that list for next goalscorer. A well struck shot from the former Everton man has Jones scrambling across his goal. Baxter is 11/1 to score the next goal.

Next goalscorer: Suarez 21/10, Sturridge 3/1, Borini 9/2, Smith 11/1

4.30pm: Some more good build-up play from Liverpool sees Sterling with a chance in the Oldham box but his shot is too soft and too close to Bouzanis. Should have done better.

Price Update: Oldham 12/1, Draw 7/2, Liverpool 1/4

4.26pm: Sturridge and Suarez link up well to create an opening for the Uruguayan. He smashes it in to the carpark but Liverpool are starting to dominate this game.

4.25pm: Henderson puts a good ball in which Surez nods past Bouzanis but the off-side flag goes up. Close.

4.24pm: Suarez is hacked down by Wabaraa on the edge of the Oldham box and becomes the lastest player to receive a yellow card.

4.22pm: Sturridge takes the ball in the box, shows great feet and wins a corner. There’s some handbags afterwards but nothing exciting enough to describe in detail.

4.18pm: Suarez takes the ball, runs at the Oldham defence, plays a one-two off a defender and then hits his 21st goal of the season. What a player.

4.17pm: Goal! Luis Suarez equalises for Liverpool

4.14pm: Smith is causing problems for the Liverpool centre-halves. His knock down falls to Jose Baxter on the edge of the box. He hits the ball well but it misses the target.

4.12pm: Jack Robinson gives away a free-kick on the edge of the Liverpool box…but it comes to nowt.

4.10pm: The injured M’Changama is replaced by Carl Winchester.

4.08pm: Jones spills a shot and Simpson rushes in to try and nick it off him. Jones is unhappy with the contact made as he gathered the ball and a skirmish ensues. Simpson goes in the book. Again possibly a tad harsh.

4.06pm: And now Raheem picks up an early yellow card for a late tackle on M’Changama. A little harsh on the youngster but he’ll need to be careful now.

4.04pm: Oldham started well but Liverpool’s defence looked very shaky as the home side pressed in the opening minutes.

4.03pm: Goal!!! Oldham go 1-0 up after two minutes after Skrtel puts in to his own net after Smith beat Coates in the air. Uh oh.

4pm: We have kick-off.

Team News
Brendan Rodgers has gone for a very attacking team with Sturridge, Suarez, Sterling and Borini all starting at Boundary Park. If there’s a weakness for Oldham to exploit it could be in the middle of the park where no Gerrard and no Lucas could leave the Reds a touch directionless.
