Sir Des Champs laid down a marker for the Cheltenham Gold Cup by winning the Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown this afternoon. The Mullins-trained hurdler is now 7/2 from 9/2 for the Festival’s big race and is the clear second favourite behind 3/1 shot Bobs Worth.
Despite not always jumping as clean as his punters might like, Sir Des Champs always looked to be holding off the odds-on favourite Flemenstar in an engaging battle up the home straight. A fist pump from jockey Davey Russell said it all as Flemenstar, with Andrew Lynch on board, showed more signs that he doesn’t enjoy the three-mile trip.
Silviniaco Conti has also been trimmed from 7/1 to 11/2 for the big one at Cheltenham after an impressive performance in the Grade Two Denman Chase at Newbury. The Paul Nicholls-trained seven-year-old made it four wins on the spin by convincingly beating the Giant Bolster by seven lengths. The 8/11 favourite flew over the final fence and surged clear from his nearest challenger to the post. Paddy Power was just as quick off his chair as he slashed Silviniaco Conti’s price for the Gold Cup.
Paddy has priced up every single Cheltenham Festival race already and he has been moving plenty of prices after a thrilling afternoon’s racing. Here’s a run-down of today’s big movers and shakers:
