VIDEO: Spanish player who isn’t Xabi Alonso does a Xabi Alonso

by Aidan Elder | February 25, 2013

It’s strange how we automatically label this type of goal ‘a Xabi Alonso special’. Strange because Alonso has only managed about to score about two of them in his entire career and most of his plentiful attempts end up going wide or floating tamely over the cross bar.

Maybe people will start calling the lob from the halfway line the ‘Jordi Amat‘ although that’s unlikely because he plays for Rayo Vallecano and they’re about as fashionable as getting Michael Barrymore to host your prime-time light entertainment TV show. The name may not stick, but at least he can comfort himself with his goal bonus and the fact he’s a very minor internet phenomenon. Enjoy!
