Cheltenham 2013 | Pictures

The Festival got the go-ahead at 10.30am. You’ve studied the ground, the form and made sure the jockey wasn’t out on the lash in O’Neill’s last night. You just need to add the term ‘wind-chill factor’ to your racing vocabulary and suddenly you’re the ‘go-to’ guy for pretty girls in short skirts who got the dress code for Cheltenham 2013 and Royal Ascot mixed up.

Here’s a picture guide to what’s happening at the course. Go get ’em big guy.

LOOKIN AT YA:

GANGSTA ON THE GALLOPS : Top jock Davy Russell aint takin’ no sh*t

Davy Russell rides Un Atout in the first for his bosses at Gigginstown Stud. Going for his fourth win on the bounce. Davy looks like he means business.

FESTIVAL FEVER: Ruby Walsh rides Champagne Fever in the first at 2.05

Ruby jumped off Dodging Bullets quick smart when Willie Mullins declared last year’s Champion Bumper winner Champagne Fever for Tuesday’s opener. Looking to become the first horse to win back-to-back races at the Festival since Montelado did the double in 1992/93.

COVER UP:

ROLL ON RACING! Groundstaff unveil the sight we all wanted to see

At 10.30am and countless heart murmurs later the covers came off the hallowed turf. Racing has been put back 35 minutes to 2.05 while the Cross-Country Chase course faces a further inspection at 2.15pm. Jessica Harrington will hope Mr Sunshine does his job as her Bostons Angel looks well handicapped and is 7/1 in the betting with Paddy Power.

OFF THE RAILS: Precisely where most of the 60,000 punters will be going at 2.05pm

The last lung-bursting push up Cleeve Hill can make or break a trainers/jockeys/owner’s year. Not to mention the 250,000 punters who will throng the course over the four days.

GROUND FOR CONCERN:  The going is officially soft for the racing on Day 1

Red-hot favourites My Tent or Yours and Simonsig have been the horses for money all morning after clerk of the course Simon Claisse told punters what they long suspected and the ground will ride soft for Day 1 of Cheltenham 2013.
