MANCHESTER BOUND? Is David Moyes really in line to take over from Sir Alex?

By Josh Powell | Next permanent Manchester United manager

Just a few bank holiday drinks. That was the plan. Super Sunday had been mediocre but there was a reason to celebrate in Power Tower, because all was quiet going in to Bank Holiday Monday.

That was until we saw a truckload of money come in for David Moyes to replace Sir Alex Ferguson and all hell broke loose. The Everton gaffer had just stopped berating the officials for some dubious decisions during the Merseyside Derby and now he was being well and truly backed off the boards to take the biggest job in football.

Fergie is due to have hip surgery over the summer, a common operation for a 71-year-old, and it may means he will miss a few games at the start of next season. Some shrewd punters have seen this as a sign that the end is nigh and ploughed in to Moyes, forcing Paddy to cut the price from 7/2 to 4/7 favourite overnight.

The debates are already raging in beer gardens up and down the country. Will Fergie really call it a day? Is Moyes the right man to take over? What about ‘The Special One’? Who in their right mind is backing Roy Keane? Am I confident enough in my sexuality to drink a summer fruits Kronenberg?

There are too many questions.

Whoever takes over as the next manager of Manchester United has one hell of a job to fill Ferguson’s shoes. These are just some of his achievements over the last 26 years as United’s most successful gaffer.

  • 13 Premier League titles
  • 5 FA Cups
  • 2 Champions Leagues
  • 4 League Cups
  • 1 FIFA World Club Cup

After a healthy chunk of bets Moyes is the 4/7 favourite to try to continue that roll of honour. Pep Guardiola is at 7/1 closely followed by ‘The Special One’ Jose Mourinho who is 8/1. Fresh from reaching a Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund Jurgen Klopp is 14/1 with United legends Ryan Giggs and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer available at 16/1 and 20/1 respectively.
