South Africa won’t be at next year’s World Cup after defeat to Ethiopia meant the 2010 hosts can’t progress from their qualifying group, thanks in large part to this thunderous own goal from Bernard Parker.
Things had started pretty well for Parker. His goal put them 1-0 up after 34 minutes, but he cancelled that moment of joy out with this header that rockets into the top corner of his own net, beyond a helpless Itumeleng Khule in goal. That goal made it 2-1 to the hosts and as that’s how it finished, it gave the Walia Antelopes (African football has the best nicknames) an unassailable lead at the top of the group.
It’s heart-breaking stuff. But only if you’re South African. For everyone else, it’s an amusing GIF.
