After his transfer to Barcelona from Brazilian club side Santos for a reported €57m earlier this summer, many European fans have used the Confederations Cup games to take a really hard look at a player we’ll be seeing a lot more of next season.
Mostly Neymar has impressed. There’s no denying the quality touches he has shown and the below strike against Japan in Brazil’s 3-0 opening win was even better, technique wise, than perhaps was made of it.
If he and Messi can form an understanding they could elevate Barcelona’s attacking play even further. Neymar has the ability to add even greater goal scoring options to a team which scored 115 goals in 38 LA Liga games last season.
However Neymar isn’t always silky skills and world class technique. As we saw in this incident in Brazil’s semi-final win against Uruguay where he embarrassingly flung himself up in the air clutching his untouched face in faux agony, before hitting the turf looking for a free-kick. It makes for a funny animated GIF but not even the Barcelona fans will want to see diving of this theatrical standard.
Hopefully well see more of the skills and less of the diving when Brazil take on Spain in the Confederations Cup final.
