The dream was to win a world title belt which he could defend in Ireland against fellow Irish middleweight Andy Lee in Tipperary’s Semple Stadium. The reality for Matthew Macklin was a third round stoppage at the hands of the Kazakhstan’s brutal knock-out artist Gennady Golovkin in Connecticut on Saturday night
That was Macklin’s third loss in four fights and the fifth loss of his 34 fight career. He may now struggle to get another world title tilt after this defeat and a match-up with Lee in the near future will have little value outside of Ireland.
Golovkin remains unbeaten in 27 fights, this stoppage being the 24th of his career. Despite also being 31-years of age he is very much on the up in his career and a unifying match-up with WBC champion Sergio Gabriel Martinez is the next logical step.
