Why Kevin Pietersen can inspire an England victory in the first Test

When he isn’t causing conflict in the dressing room or sending inappropriate texts to his South African buddies, Kevin Pietersen is pretty handy with a bat in his hands. His choices of hairstyle is dubious but his technique and power at the crease is unmatched in the England team.

The three lions are well fancied to win the Ashes at 2/5 and if most previews are to be believed it’s going to be easier than getting pissed at a wedding. Unfortunately when you’re on a Paddy Power wage and the company is busy forking out £2 million back to punters, 2/5 isn’t a very appealing price. Lucky that’s where KP enters the equation.

The England batsman is 10/1 to be named Man of the Match in the first Test at Trent Bridge. In the last three Ashes series, a batsman has been awarded the man of the match in the first Test and with a dry pitch in Nottingham, there are some big scores expected this week.

England are the 5/6 favourites for the opening Test and if you believe that an English batsman will pick up the champagne at the end of the match, Pietersen could be your guy.

THE SPRINKLER: KP is as dangerous at the crease as he is on the dancefloor. Just less cringe-worthy.

Pietersen leads the way in runs and strike rate and knows how to rack up a big score against the Baggy Greens. He has a staggering batting career strike rate of 62.76 and is well fancied to be England’s top series run scorer.

If that’s not enough to persuade you that he might be worth a nibble, why not take on board the words of former Ashes winner, professional boxer, League of Their Own captain and face of Jacamo, Freddie Flintoff…

‘I don’t care what the rankings say about South Africa, I believe England are the best team in the world right now. And in KP we have the best player’, Flintoff told the Sun.

‘He is a world-class batsman with 22 Test hundreds and who is ready to dominate this Ashes series.’

Wise words from a man who knows a thing or two about hitting the Aussies for six.
