Championship previews | Ipswich Town
Real Championship football fans give the Paddy Power Blog their honest previews for the new season. Blair Ferguson (@Blair Ferguson4) who writes for TWTD, tells us to look out for goal-machine David McGoldrick and a possible top six finish.
State of play: There were a lot of positives to draw on at the end of last season for the Blues. New boss, Mick McCarthy, had led them to safety finishing 14th. Being eight points off the play-offs and six points away from relegation can make it difficult to judge what might happen in the 2013/14 season but things are looking bright and there is an air of optimism around Portman Road.
If everything clicks in to place, the season could be very different to those endured under Paul Jewel and Roy Keane. Before a ball has been kicked a cautiously optimistic guess of a play-off place would be where my money goes.
How’s the gaffer? McCarthy has steadied the ship and started to build what looks to be a winning team. Under his stewardship the defence has stopped leaking goals and with the addition of Christophe Berra this can hopefully continue to be the case.
Terrace hero: Striker David McGoldrick is the most likely to be the star man, having had a strong pre-season he looks dangerous in front of goal and looks as if he is full of confidence. Coupled together with the new additions in midfield of Tabb, Skuse and Anderson, he could be the first striker to get 20 goals in a season for quite some time.
Big-time Charlie: Many fans will be glad to see the back of Chopra, who didn’t quite deliver during his time and doesn’t really fit the McCarthy mould of player.
Worst away ground in the Championship and why? With Watford failing in the play-offs another trip to Vicarage Road beckons where Ipswich have only won once in the last six seasons. It seems as if every time you enter another part of the stadium has fallen down with some much needed redevelopment work need!
Which Championship side have the best away fans? Leeds were fairly noisy when they came to Portman Road, given they are so well supported and have a strong history you’d expect them to bring a large support. It didn’t help them last season though as they lost 3-0!
Who is your dream Championship signing? Given the choice of any player from last season George Boyd would be top of the list. A player of his ability would have been vital going forward whilst giving a bit of creativity in midfield.
