Tony Mowbray is lucky to still be in a job at Middlesbough, but it’s onwards and upwards

LUCKY BOY: Mowbray was fortunate to still have a job after last season’s 16th place finish

Championship previews | Middlesbrough

Real Championship football fans give the Paddy Power Blog their honest previews for the new season. Boro fan Stuart Young (@borobrickroad) who writes for Follow The Boro Brick Road, explains how Middlesbrough can build on last season’s nightmare.

State of play: We had a very poor season last term finishing 16th and losing 23 games along the way. The second half of the season was dreadful and very flat so a summer break has hopefully brought some determination and fight back amongst the players.

How’s the gaffer? Tony Mowbray was lucky to keep his job at the end of the season but to be fair to him he’s got stuck-in with pre-season and stripped the squad. Several players have left and only a couple come in which seems to have got rid of some of the unrest in the dressing room. The squad remains thin but we have some cracking youngsters ready to make their mark this year.

Terrace hero: I would like to think one of the star players this season will be a striker, someone who will score goals to win us games. Marvin Emnes was very average last season and lacked confidence but after seeing him score a few goals in pre-season he can be our star man.

Big-time Charlie: Luckily Tony Mowbray got rid of a few players that would come under this category so currently we have a good bunch. Ask that question after a dozen games and you might get a different response though!

Worst away ground in the Championship and why? It has to be Vicarage Road. The Watford fans are so quiet there – there is no atmosphere at all. We still have fun though even if the home fans don’t get involved.

Which Championship side have the best away fans? Us of course…Up the Boro!

Who is your dream Championship signing? We’ve not had a goal-scorer in the side for years so it would have to be a striker, and going on last season’s goal stats I would love to sign Burnley’s Charlie Austin. He’s big and strong and knows where the goal is. He would get Boro into the Premier League.

What is your best terrace chant?

‘Come on Boro!’
