Championship previews | Charlton Athletic
Real Championship football fans give the Paddy Power Blog their honest previews for the new season. Addicks fan Martin Flynn (@addictedaddick) tells us how the future is bright thanks to the Charlton Academy, and some decent home form is on the agenda.
State of Play: In our first season back in the Championship, a league which is tighter than a pair of skinny jeans on Mr Blobby, we finished a respectable ninth position. Our home form was well below par at The Valley but this was balanced by our fine away form which was the fourth best in the Championship. A string of late winners at home towards the end of the season saw a fine finish for the Addicks eventually just falling short of the Play-Off places.
The Gaffer: Chris Powell continues his third season as Charlton Manager. A player at the club on three separate occasions he’s a popular choice with Addicks fans and well-respected both at the club and within football. Still early in his managerial career he is renowned for being one of football’s “nice guy’s” but underlying this is a real eye for attention and a steely determination. He has a strong passion to go out and win games and always get the best out of his team.
Terrace Hero: Tough one to call as our current group of players really pull together as a unit which our fans love to see, and has seen us win League 1 and finish well in the Championship within the past 2 seasons. Right-back Chris Solly remains a fan favourite winning Player of the Year twice in that time and midfielder Johnnie Jackson remains a popular Captain at the Club. French striker Yann Kermorgant remains a talismanic cult-hero, but really it’s about the team as a whole for our supporters.
‘Big Time Charlie’: There are no real ‘Big-time Charlie’s’ as such with Charlton Athletic but goalkeeper Ben Hamer is always a funny, cheeky chap and again remains another popular figure with Addicks fans.
Worst away ground in the Championship and why? Local rivals Millwall – enough said.
Which Championship side have the best away fans? You’d probably have to say Brighton for their similar dislike of Crystal Palace, and impressive support both home and away. Also it usually tends to be a close, competitive fixture when we play each other.
Dream Signing: Well Lionel Messi obviously! Realistically though we’re currently short on strikers after departures over the summer, so we could certainly do with bringing in a striker or two that would hopefully get 10-15 goals between them. Unfortunately that’s much easier said than done these days! We do have a great Academy setup though, so maybe our dream signing is already at the club and ready to make their mark. Young Callum Harriot has just come through and is an exciting player to watch.
‘Chris Solly, Solly. He’s only 5’ 3. He’s better than John Terry. Chris Solly, Solly!’
