Matt Chapman exclusive: Four red-hot tips for day one of Goodwood

Matt Chapman | Goodwood preview

Hands up who hates a gloating tipster? Me too, but as no one else will blow my trumpet I’ll have to do it myself.

We’ve had a couple of good weeks, with Lethal Force and Novellist doing the business and smashing up Paddy Power’s profits. I am here to destroy your Christmas bonus – you hear me Paddy?

The problem with gloating, of course, if that the losing run is always just around the corner, that said, like any punter you have to enjoy the wins when you have them. And I’ve enjoyed the last two weeks.

Glorious Goodwood starts today, but the weather is anything but glorious and the ground is going to be softer than you might imagine. That poses problems after such a long period of fast ground.

Let’s have a look at the four feature races on Ch4.

Garswood

TALENTED: Garswood has the form in the book for the Lennox Stakes

1.55pm: If the ground was firm I would not be going for NABUCCO, but with a bit of juice his terrible draw might not be so bad. He’s got classy 10f form, acts with cut and while a 7lb rise for a recent success makes things tough, I’m looking for him to hit the frame so back him each-way. Fast or Free is interesting, but he’s been off the track a long time and it would be a hell of a performance to win after 404 days away from the course.

2.30pm: Royal Ascot runner-up Supplicant has a great shout. However, I like ANTICIPATED who was a short-head third in the Windsor Castle Stakes behind him. He’s proven on soft ground and ran ok in France last time.

3.05pm: Aljamaaher is the obvious one in the Lennox, but Roger Varian told me yesterday this horse really needs fast ground. That’s a worry. Take a chance with GARSWOOD each-way, who will love a bit of cut and was far from disgraced behind Dawn Approach in the 2,000 Guineas after landing the Free Handicap.

3.40pm: I’ve got to stick with ORIENTAL FOX, who was unlucky to get nabbed late by Tominator in the Northumberland Plate. He’s still on a nice racing weight and will be staying on strong.

Yeeehaaa!
