There was a worrying point during last season when comments about Aston Villa went from the ‘too good to go down’ cliche to something more like ‘nope, they’re about the right standard to go down’. That would have been around Christmas time when they took one point out of a possible 12 and ended up with goal difference of -15 for the period. Things picked up in the home stretch to eventually pull clear of the relegation bun fight, but not to the point were the dark clouds have all dispersed.
After looking resigned to their star striker walking out, Villa managed to throw enough cash at Christian Benteke to make him stay for another while and that’s a huge boost. Although they would have used that cash to strengthen, it’s hard to imagine they would have stumbled upon a player who could provide the performances the Belgian did in his debut season in England. He’s again crucial to their fortunes. And if a few of team-mates want to chip in with bigger contributions, that wouldn’t hut the cause either.
