Steve Bruce’s career is basically a load of mini-cycles. Generally it goes:
(1) Arrives – club make immediate progress, seems like a managerial good
(2) Settles in – progress stalls/signing Paul McShane seems like a good idea
(3) Gets found out – club starts going backwards, turns out he’s not a coaching genius
As Bruce is somewhere between stages (1) and (2) of his entirely predictable cycle, Hull Tigers City or whatever the owner has decided to call them on any particular day have a decent chance of survival. They’ve also got a decent chance of relegation thanks in large part to a squad full of players who have graced the Premier League previously, but not exactly set it alight. If their whole proves to be greater than the sum of their parts, survival is possible, but if the sum of their parts is just the sum of their parts, a swift return is on the cards.
