A summer of off the field drama has somewhat distracted people from the fact Newcastle haven’t done much in the way of transfers thus far. First, there was the appointment of Joe Kinnear to the Director of Football role which it turns out wasn’t a joke or an old man losing his mind. After that, it was the furore of Papiss Cisse refusing to wear the Wonga.com jersey on religious grounds – refusing to wear it from the comfort of a casino.
If Newcastle can hang on to their star players until after the transfer window shuts, the lack of incoming talent may not be such a big deal. Alan Pardew has some quality players at his disposal – that’s without question. What’s not without question is his ability to stop looking longingly in the mirror and motivate those players. Last season’s troubles were largely down to players looking like they didn’t give a crap about staying on Tyneside much longer. Unless that attitude has changed, it’ll feel like a long season at St. James’s Sports Goods Direct Arena Park.
