Gary Lineker tweets #RBGF support just before bedtime

by Paddy Power Admin | September 22, 2013

Say what you like about Gary Lineker, but he stands by his word.

Last Wednesday the Gay Football Supporters’ Network tweeted the former England striker and current Match of the Day host to enquire if he supported the Rainbow Laces campaign.

Gary, sitting on his platinum throne at the time, promptly tweeted back. He asked for Rainbow Laces to be sent to the BBC in Salford at Media City UK. Paddy jumped on his Raleigh Vector faster than you can say ‘questionable taste in shirts’.

The BBC, however, refused to take the Rainbow Laces at reception. They sent our courier down the road to the post room instead.

Now, a kind-hearted man he may be but, frankly, we didn’t think Gary would be arsed with a busy MOTD production day ahead to lug himself to the post room to pick up laces. So a beautiful man (thank you, Jon) helped us out and we biked the package to Gary’s house directly.

It was a dramatic day of football on Saturday in the Premier League. Across Ireland and the UK, sportspeople and punters pledged their support for Rainbow Laces. So, like every Saturday night, we were glued to MOTD to see how they covered it.

We’re a little suspicious that BBC bureaucracy kept Gary’s shoes planted firmly under the desk away from the jealous eyes of Robbie Fowler and the wider media spotlight.

However, good to his word, Lineker (he of FA Cup, Copa del Rey, European Cup and Golden Boot fame) tweeted this picture at 12.34am, showing Rainbow Laces off to his 1.8m Twitter followers (after his bosses had gone to bed).

Good on you, Gary. We’ll call off our Walkers boycott.
