Simonsig Betting: the likely 2013/14 season schedule

When and where we can expect to see Simonsig this season

by Aidan Elder | October 19, 2013

Took the switch to fences in his stride last season rounding off his three-win term with victory in the Arkle Chase at the Festival, but an injury picked up on the gallops has muddied waters that had been looking fairly straight-forward as he graduated into the class of senior chasers.

Despite at one point being joint favourite for the Paddy Power Gold Cup on November 19, he’ll now miss that and without having some sort of Lazarus like recovery, he’s likely to miss the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day too.

We’re highly unlikely to see Simonsig in action until writing ‘2014’ starts to feel like less of an amusing novelty. A three mile chase towards the end of January or start of February could be on the cards and with Bobs Worth likely to go the Argento Chase route, that’s likely to nudge Nicky Henderson’s other three or so mile chasing star in the direction of the Denman Chase at Newbury.  There are a few options around that time of year, so don’t be booking your raceday tickets based entirely on our wild speculation.

Depending on how he gets on with being upped in distance, either the Ryanair Chase or the Cheltenham Gold Cup could be the target for the headstrong seven-year-old, but at the moment the budget airline option looks more likely where he sits as joint favourite alongside Cue Card.

Stat: Has won eight of his nine races under rules.
